Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor Year Two #14

When all else fails, write what you know — which may be why this first of two issues of “Invasion of the Mindmorphs” features a writer/artist team of comic creators. Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor Year Two #14 will be out February 1.

Writer Robbie Morrison and artist Rachael Stott present a story about a spatting pair of co-workers and roommates who make an action-packed comic about the Time Surgeon, his sonic scalpel, and his assistant Nurse Kara fighting cone-shaped deathroids who repeat “Eradicate!” and are led by the Minister, as shown here. They’re taken from a comic convention by the Doctor to give them more of an idea of what being a time traveler would really be like… and perhaps for another reason, as well.

Apparently the Doctor is insulted by how “one-dimensional” and “ludicrous” the comic is, leading him to show them the real extent of his life. Plus, he seems to want to play cupid, something I consider pretty far out for this incarnation of the character. As the artists put it, “you kidnap us, then you dangle us before the jaws of death… and now, you’re giving us relationship advice?”

Their trip allows for one of those quick montages of crazy space places and imaginative events the comics do so well, before the gang winds up on a planet that isn’t what the Doctor promised. (Also typical of this type of story.) Instead of the “creative utopia” (something it would be fun to imagine) he promised, the Doctor finds that the planet of Zarma has been taken over and needs his help. Cue the cliffhanger!

This isn’t an exceptional story, mostly setup for whatever happens next, but the character bits are good (and I like this take on the twelfth Doctor better than what I’ve seen on screen), and I’m curious to see how the comic creators are allowed to save the day.
