Freeform (formerly ABC Family) is planning a Cloak and Dagger TV show, due late next year, as a teen romance drama. Now, they’ve ordered their second Marvel-inspired series.

New Warriors is planned as a half-hour comedy, with ten episodes in the first season, also due 2018. It’ll be about six young people learning to be heroes, termed “about-to-be Avengers”, and the only character mentioned so far is Squirrel Girl, a fan favorite. The show runner will be Kevin Biegel, who’s worked on series I’ve enjoyed (including Cougar Town, Scrubs, and Enlisted).

With the poor showing of Powerless, another superhero sitcom has an uphill fight, but I’ve always liked teen heroes, particularly the ever-optimistic Squirrel Girl. A lot will depend on writing and casting, of course. And this show is going to be about people with powers, not those adjacent to them.

Other famous New Warriors of the past — making them possible team members — include the sporting-a-helmet-from-space Nova; Spider-Man’s former friend, the flame-powered Firestar; the Atlantean Namorita; the Batman-like Night Thrasher; and the bouncy Speedball.
