MoCCA Announces Juried Award of Excellence

You’re just not a comic show these days without an associated awards program. The Society of Illustrators, the group behind the MoCCA Arts Festival, has announced an Awards of Excellence program to recognize “the most outstanding work on view at the festival”, debuting at this year’s show. The way it works is, jury members walk the show on the afternoon of Saturday, April 6, picking contenders for the award based on “quality of artwork”. (So if you’re a great writer […]

Beautiful Creatures: The Manga

I had heard of Beautiful Creatures as a movie, a gender-swapped attempt to cash in on the Twilight audience with a paranormal romance based on a popular novel series. I wasn’t likely to either read or see it, so a comic version seemed a great way for me to sample the story. Ethan is stuck in a small Southern town. He’s pretending not to be as smart or bored as he is, biding time until he can leave. Then Lena […]

Archie Sales Figures for 2012

Continuing the tradition, but a lot later this year. That’s because, with most of the titles publishing less frequently than monthly, I had to wait for all the figures to be available. Even so, Life With Archie isn’t available yet for this year. This is my sixth year compiling the Archie sales figures filed with the government from the Statements of Ownership, Management, and Circulation the company is required to include in their publications. These numbers appeared in issues published […]

Archie #641: Archie Meets Glee

written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa; pencils by Dan Parent; inks by Rich Koslowski I wasn’t sure what to expect when the Archie/Glee crossover was announced last summer, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how well this worked out. Dilton, science guy, is the plot device character, of course — he’s invented a device to open portals to parallel universes. This lets him meet and talk with Brittany, who thinks he’s her “imaginary friend who lives in her locker”. This structure […]

Zombie Trend Officially Dead; Archie Comics Announces Zombie Title

Archie Comics today announced Afterlife With Archie, an ongoing comic title debuting this fall. It will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, but no artist has been announced. The company described it as “a zombie series revolving around the beloved characters. The comic will blend attributes of horror comics along with the typical Archie fare, for both new and old fans to enjoy.” I know every comic company wishes they had the huge success of The Walking Dead, but I find […]

Cartoon Network Cancels Young Justice, Green Lantern; Launches Teen Titans Go!, Beware the Batman

Cartoon Network released its 2013 schedule plans, and the cartoon shows Young Justice and Green Lantern weren’t on it. The latter, in particular, was a second chance at trying to make the property a franchise after the failure of the big-budget movie. ICv2 has more speculation about what this means, saying “it brings up the question of whether or not the Green Lantern property will ever be anything more than a niche hit in the comic market with little or […]

Vinland Saga Coming in Fall From Kodansha

In October, Kodansha Comics will be publishing the first book of Vinland Saga, the story of Vikings in medieval England in the 1000s. This historical manga, already up to 12 volumes in Japan, is by Makoto Yukimura, author of the much-missed Planetes. I’m not a huge Viking fan, but I was very impressed by how interesting he made outer space garbage collecting in Planetes, so I’m definitely interested in giving it a try. This will be Kodansha’s first hardcover, made […]

Superman: Unbound Extras, Voices, and Images

We have some new images from Superman: Unbound, starring Matt Bomer (Superman), Molly Quinn (Supergirl), and Stana Katic (Lois Lane). I like how expressive the characters look. Newly announced voices include Frances Conroy as Ma Kent, Wade Williams as Perry White, Diedrich Bader as Steve Lombard, and Stephen Root as Zor-El. I think I’m going to have a hard time with Jimmy James as Supergirl’s dad — I kid! Root is quite talented and I’m sure will voice the character […]
