Red Sonja Expands Motion Comics for Shout! Factory

When motion comics started, several publishers were doing them, but then Marvel ran away with the format, putting out a number of X-Men and Wolverine titles with Shout! Factory. I haven’t seen any yet this year — although I admit, I’m not a huge fan so I don’t pay close attention — so I was surprised to note that last week, Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues was released. For one thing, I was surprised to see them still coming out […]

Eternals: A Marvel Knights Animation Motion Comic

I was surprised when Eternals arrived, since I didn’t remember a comic by Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. about a race of super-powered Jack Kirby creations hiding as humans recapturing their memories and powers. (Turns out it was a limited series that ran from 2006-2007.) This Marvel Knights Animation production consists of ten episodes, each ranging from 10 to 13 minutes. There’s minimal animation — figures moved against a background, lips and eyes opening and closing — an approach […]

Wolverine vs. Sabretooth: The Marvel Knights Animation Motion Comic

Out tomorrow is the latest Marvel Knights motion comic release from Shout! Factory, Wolverine vs. Sabretooth. I tried to watch it, I did. But I don’t like Jeph Loeb’s writing. I didn’t like the prehistoric werewolf opening or watching bloody scenes of disembowelment while the narrator, Wolverine, says things to himself like “Having spent the better part of my life with no real certainty who I was or where I came from. And no, it wasn’t the beer. Suddenly, I […]

Next Marvel Knights Motion Comic Wolverine Vs. Sabretooth

Following Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk, the next Marvel Knights animated (motion comic) DVD release will feature another Wolverine battle. Wolverine Vs. Sabretooth is due out January 14, 2014 from Shout! Factory. I don’t even remember hearing about this comic, but it seems that it’s written by Jeph Loeb (now out in Hollywood working on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and drawn by Simone Bianchi (Astonishing X-Men). It was published as Wolverine: Evolution, collecting Wolverine #50-55 from 2007. There’s a major spoiler […]

Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk

As I previously wrote, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk converts the six-issue comic miniseries by Damon Lindelof and Leinil Francis Yu to six 10-minute-ish “motion comic” chapters. It goes on sale tomorrow, September 10. The level of animation is lighter than I remembered from previous releases. For example, lips are made to move for dialogue, but eyes never blink, and nothing else on the page/screen moves. Movement looks like someone’s dragging paper cutouts around, or it’s done by moving the camera […]

Marvel Motion Comics Continue Wolverine Focus

After the release of Wolverine: Origin last month, Shout! Factory has announced the next Marvel Knights motion comic DVD release will be Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk, due out September 10. Another Wolverine title makes sense, given this summer’s The Wolverine movie release. I hadn’t thought about Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk since its release, since it was notorious for taking a ridiculous amount of time to continue, probably because it was written by Damon Lindelof (Lost), whom one assumes had other […]

Next Marvel Motion Comic Wolverine: Origin

This is an obvious prediction to anyone who’s been paying attention, since the Marvel Knights Animation motion comic releases from Shout! Factory tend to follow the path of the Marvel movies, and The Wolverine is due in theaters July 26. The next motion comic DVD will be available on July 9, adapting the Wolverine: Origin comic “written by Eisner Award winner Paul Jenkins from a story by Joe Quesada, Paul Jenkins, and Bill Jemas with captivating artwork by Andy Kubert […]

Marvel Knights Motion Comics to Continue With Inhumans

I had thought that the Marvel Knights Animation motion comic series from Shout! Factory might be wrapping up after the four-volume Joss Whedon Astonishing X-Men releases. I was wrong. Shout! Factory has just announced that Inhumans, based on the (out of print) comic by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee with the same cover, will be out on DVD on April 23. List price is $14.97, same as previous Marvel Knights Animation releases, and the bonus feature is “A Look Back […]
