Red 2: An Action Comedy as Good as the First

I don’t normally rush right out to see movies on opening weekend, but the original Red movie was such a pleasant surprise that Red 2 seemed like it would be a fun summer diversion. And it was. They’ve expanded the cast. It seemed like every time the scene changed, there was another old buddy or villain introduced, but the film doesn’t feel overstuffed. Bruce Willis is back as Frank, former CIA agent who’s Retired and Extremely Dangerous. Also returning is […]

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox Video Clips, Premiere Today

Now that we’re a little more than a week away from the release of Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (on July 30), video clips have been made available. First, there’s the trailer, explaining the premise of the Flash-centered story: Next, Cyborg (Michael B. Jordan) introduces his allies to Batman (Kevin McKidd; the character wisecracks a lot for someone with glowy red eyes) and explains the situation: The movie premieres at the San Diego Comic-Con tonight at 7:30, with appearances by […]

Monsters University

Just got back from seeing Monsters University, and while I enjoyed it, it was definitely a sequel that didn’t reach the heights of the original Monsters Inc.. We already know the characters, and the plot here is very familiar. In fact, if you’ve seen a college movie, you know what happens. There’s the devoted youngster whose dedication takes him through every challenge (Billy Crystal as Mike), his buddy who learns the true meaning of friendship (John Goodman as Sully), the […]

Captain America Winter Soldier Publicity Starts Nine Months Out

Marvel/Disney has released the first teaser poster for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger will be in theaters on April 4, 2014, nine months from now. So get ready to hear about it until then! It’s a distinctive poster, evoking the hero while making it clear that things are not happy. The shield is battered, with all the color worn away, some replaced with what looks like blood. I hope this doesn’t mean […]

Robot Chicken DC Comics Special

Out on July 9 is the home video version of the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special, a 23-minute animated parody of how the classic superheroes would act if they were frat boys. The opening sequence, which plays the old-school Super Friends cartoon theme as we watch a robot humping the Bat-signal, sets up the blend of crudeness and nostalgia to follow. I haven’t before seen any of the Robot Chicken specials, but they seem to be to comedy what podcasting […]

Lone Ranger Features Released on YouTube

To promote the upcoming film The Lone Ranger, in theaters starting July 3 and starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, Disney has released two behind-the-scenes featurettes. They do the job, since I’m more interested in seeing the movie after viewing these promos. In “The Craft”, producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks about the practical effects and settings, and Depp almost gets trampled by his horse. The footage included is quite impressive, particularly the stunts. “Hi-Yo Silver”, as you might expect, looks at […]

This Is the End

Last night, I got to see a preview of This Is the End, a horror comedy that opens tomorrow. As you can see from the poster, it stars James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride all playing themselves — or the version of themselves they want to show for this story. The premise starts by exploring what it means to be friends, and how you combine your old and new groups. Old friend Jay […]
