Ghostbusters 101 Crosses Over Old, New Teams in March

Coming out March 22 is the first issue of a new series, Ghostbusters 101, that promises to feature both the 1984 male team and the more recent group of women bearing the title. I don’t envy writer Erik Burnham and artist Dan Schoening taking this on. They’ve been working on the licensed comic for five years, so they know their stuff, but they have quite the challenge in balancing the audiences for the two teams — those who want to […]

Another Manga by Bunny Drop Author Coming to US

I know a number of manga fans who were really disappointed by Bunny Drop by Yumi Unita. They liked the early part of the series, about a young man raising an orphaned little girl, but they disagreed with the direction the series took near the end. (The dislike means, for some, any series that features an older man/young girl interacting, such as Sweetness & Lightning, now causes fear that it’s going to take a creepy turn. It’s unfortunate that Bunny […]

Kiss Him, Not Me! Volume 5

As if having four guys and a girl after Kae wasn’t enough, in Kiss Him, Not Me! volume 5, we meet the older brother of strong-and-silent Mutsumi. He’s a student teacher in the kids’ school, and he decides he’s interested in Kae as well, although there’s a strong implication that it may be just to annoy his brother, or that he enjoys manipulation. First, though, the gang goes on a treasure hunt based on a map found in the history […]

What Happened to John Cassaday’s Art?

Marvel sent out this teaser for an upcoming Secret Empire project on Friday. The email I got didn’t identify the artist; Alexander Jones says it’s John Cassaday. I know they’re just promoting some new team or crossover event starring big characters — from left to right, it’s Old Man Logan (formerly Wolverine, until Marvel decided they didn’t like any movies they didn’t make), Black Panther, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Rocket Raccoon, Black Bolt, Black Widow, and Deadpool, all of […]

Spell on Wheels #1-3

Spell on Wheels is one of those genius concepts that seems so obvious when you see it but it took the creative imagination of its writer, Kate Leth, to bring it about. Here it is: Three witches are robbed, so they go on a road trip to recover their lost items, which have been sold online by a vengeful ex. Jolene is a technopath. Claire is psychic and reads tarot cards. Andy handles spells and potions. They’re a terrific trio, […]

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 11 #2

Writer Christos Gage has done it again with this new run. He does an amazing job of making these well-known characters and their challenges relevant to today’s concerns. Instead of having them refight old battles, he’s putting them in involving situations that the reader can find scary in deep, substantial, mature ways. In the previous issue, a dragon attacked San Francisco, causing terrible destruction and loss of life. This issue explores the government response — which includes forced registration for […]

Brief Histories of Everyday Objects

Andy Warner’s Brief Histories of Everyday Objects provides capsule four-page histories of a wide variety of everyday objects. But he also covers more than just “did you know who invented the microwave or the sports bra?” I previously wrote about the book’s description, but now I’ve read and enjoyed it. The contents are arranged by the likely location where you’d find the objects discussed — kitchen, living room, bathroom, but also coffee shop, office, and grocery store. History is tricky. […]
