The Trials and Tribulations of Miss Tilney

You don’t need me to tell you this, but self-publishing is hard. Particularly difficult is getting enough readers to cover the cost of the physical object. That’s why my biggest problem with the series The Trials and Tribulations of Miss Tilney is the price. Each issue — there are two so far — contains only 22 pages of comics for $5. They’re self-published and sold through Amazon. (Each also has a seven- or nine-page text story at the back.) The […]

DC Bombshells Become Comic

Where do comic concepts come from? Sometimes, it’s a cool piece of art that inspires people to want to see more. Take, for example, the DC Bombshells. Originally a set of variant covers by Ant Lucia featuring the female heroes in 40s inspired costumes and poses, they then became a merchandise line, including statues, mugs, posters, blankets, and playing cards. Finally, now they’re going to star in a comic book! DC Comics Bombshells is a digital-first comic available through ComiXology […]

Elk’s Run Gains New Life at Oni Press

I suspect many readers don’t remember Elk’s Run. Elk’s Run was a miniseries written by the now-much-better-known Joshua Hale Fialkov and illustrated by Noel Tuazon. Fialkov self-published three issues through Hoarse and Buggy Productions in 2005. That same year, it was picked up by Speakeasy, a short-lived mid-2000s comic publisher, who put out a collection of the first three issues and issue #4. Elk’s Run then was released in 2007 as a collected graphic novel from Villard, an imprint of […]

Russian Olive to Red King

Beautiful and heartbreaking, as the horror of separation slowly makes itself known to the characters and the reader. Russian Olive to Red King is the latest joint work by Kathryn Immonen and Stuart Immonen (Moving Pictures). It’s billed as a romance, but as the artists post, that’s misleading. Olive is leaving on a work trip, and Red, left behind, has his own work to do. However, on a research trip in a small plan into the Russian wilderness, there’s an […]

Batman: Murder at Wayne Manor

I finally got a chance to sample Batman: Murder at Wayne Manor, one of Quirk Books’ interactive mysteries that feature replica artifacts. It’s written by Duane Swierczynski, as was The Crimes of Dr. Watson, but as suits the main character, there are also comic-style illustrations by David Lapham. The plot here seems the best integrated with the licensed property of the three books in the series. (Along with the Holmes one, there’s also Dracula’s Heir, by another author.) Bruce Wayne […]

Powers DVD Plans Revealed

TV Shows on DVD (link no longer available) has the scoop: the Powers TV show, a PlayStation Network exclusive that was recently renewed for a second season, will bring its first season of ten episodes to DVD (list price $35.99) and Blu-ray (list price $45.99) on July 14. This isn’t based on an official press release, just a distributor website, so plans may change. I’ve heard, from a demanding fellow fan, that the show is “dire”, but then, I never […]

Two New Superhero Show Trailers I’m Excited About and a Returning Favorite

First up is the Arrow/Flash spinoff Legends of Tomorrow, the first superhero team TV show of the modern era, debuting midseason. Rip Hunter, time traveler (appropriately played by Doctor Who‘s Arthur Darvill) and member of the Time Masters, will assemble a motley group, consisting of, from Arrow, the Atom (Brandon Routh) and White Canary (Caity Lotz, the first, deceased Black Canary), and from The Flash, Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber), and Heatwave (Dominic Purcell). Plus, we’ll […]

Action Lab Launches Collectibles Line With Monster Plush and Pervert Statue

It’s no surprise that publisher Action Lab would want to enter the merchandise market, particularly with such a cute property as Gronk now in their stable. In the newest Previews catalog, you can order a six-inch plush of the little monster for $11.99. However, to fill out the line, they’re also offering a Zombie Tramp statue. I’m not surprised that this comic continues to sell, because it plays to the worst stereotypes of the direct market, offering a barely-dressed pneumatic […]
