Recent Josei Manga Titles: Updating the Timeline

Inspired by Kodansha Comics, I thought this would be a good time to update my timeline of josei manga available in English. In the two years since that post, Vertical has been the primary company carrying the flag of manga for adult women. They reprinted Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa in three omnibus volumes from 2012-2013, as well as putting out two stand-alone singles: In summer 2012, Sakuran: Blossoms Wild by Moyoco Anno (author of Happy Mania) In summer 2013, […]

The World’s End

I don’t want to say too much about The World’s End, the movie opening this weekend starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and directed by Edgar Wright, other than that it’s worth seeing. I went to see it last night knowing very little about it, and that made the experience much more fun and surprising. Usually, by the time I see a film, I’ve already heard about all the major events. The lesson here: if you know you want to […]

Adèle Blanc-Sec Movie Getting Director’s Cut Release

Urgh. I am ambivalent about the latest news from Shout! Factory about The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec. On October 1, they will be releasing a two-disc director’s cut Blu-ray edition. On the positive side, I guess this means the U.S. release did well enough to justify a follow-up. On the negative, I really hate it when movie companies double-dip — and with only two months’ separation between the releases, that’s pretty egregious. As with the previous release, the package […]

Interview With Jacques Tardi About the Adele Blanc-Sec Movie

The promotion team for The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec provided this interview with Jacques Tardi, the original comic creator. I’m reprinting it here because I admire Mr. Tardi’s attitude toward a movie adaptation of his graphic novel series and his inspiration for the lead character. Where did you get the idea for the character of Adèle-Blanc-Sec? The Casterman comic book publishing house saw my early work and commissioned me to make a series. I needed a main character to […]

Jill Thompson’s Scary Godmother to Get Doll, New Comics If Kickstarter Funds

Jill Thompson has launched a Kickstarter to sell fashion doll replicas of her Scary Godmother character. Isn’t she cute? If this succeeds, Thompson hopes it will be only the first product available, with more to come. I love this description line: “[The Scary Godmother doll] stacks up much taller and curvier than your other fashion dolls that are out there. Have a sandwich, other dolls!” Although the doll appears to be high-quality (with changeable clothes, a pumpkin purse, and her […]

BTOOOM! Volume 3

The sexism fears foreshadowed in previous volumes by Junya Inoue are here fully realized. For a change of pace, instead of facing off with yet another repellant, bloodthirsty villain, the threat in BTOOOM! volume 3 is more primal. Ryouta, his older sidekick, and the girl on the cover must survive an attack by giant lizards. But first, Ryouta and the girl (who has no name yet) face off. She manages to take herself out — thus making me wonder how […]

Wolfsmund Volume 1

When I started reading Mitsuhisa Kuji’s Wolfsmund, I thought I was in for a medieval adventure focusing on spirited rebels attempting to reclaim their land (14th century Switzerland) from a harsh occupying regime. By the end of the first chapter, I was disabused of my assumptions in shocking fashion. Given the usual formulaic structure of many manga, it was a pleasure to be so surprised by a change in direction. This series is titled after the location, a militarized pass […]
