Order These Comics! Coming November 2015
From the September Previews catalog, for books shipping November 2015 or later. It’s a light month, since many of the holiday items were offered in the last catalog, so just a few recommendations this time around.
News Items
Capitalizing on the iZombie TV show, DC brings all the iZombie Vertigo comics back into print in one giant hardcover omnibus (SEP15 0327, $75, December) with all 28 issues. It’s pricey, but it’s smart to make it all or nothing, since the comics actually have little in common with the show. They feature a disillusioned gravedigger whose best friends are a 60s-era ghost and a were-terrier. There’s also a secret agency of monster hunters and a girl gang of vampires. The writing style is more philosophical, too. Overall, I like the show better, and I suspect most TV fans will feel the same way, so better to give them one chance to buy the tie-in release.
The third book in the Hereville series, How Mirka Caught a Fish (SEP15 0954, $17.95, November), is due out from Barry Deutsch and Amulet. I’ve enjoyed the first two, How Mirka Got Her Sword and How Mirka Met a Meteorite, and this one should be no different. It’s an odd, intriguing blend of Orthodox Jewish life and fantasy mythology.
The popular webcomic The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, about a road trip romance between two guys who start as strangers to each other, is now available in a print omnibus edition (SEP15 1450, Iron Circus Comics, $30, November).
It’s a rare but happy occurrence to see a new installment of Ooku: The Inner Chambers by Fumi Yoshinaga. Volume 11 (SEP15 1711, Viz Media, $12.99, November) promises more beautifully illustrated political machinations in an alternate, female-run history. The previous volumes are also available for reorder.
And wow! Both of my favorite manga have new volumes this month! A Bride’s Story volume 7 (SEP15 1740, $17) is also coming in November from Yen Press. Another gorgeous historical tale.
Prior Reviews
Perhaps my favorite superhero story is the meta-textual Superman: Secret Identity, by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen, about a guy saddled with the name “Clark Kent”. It’s being re-released in a deluxe edition hardcover (SEP15 0308, $29.99) next February. I’m not sure what makes the collection deluxe, beyond another $10 for the binding, but it’s a really great read, so if this leads to more people experiencing it, it’s a good idea.
The Old Wounds miniseries is collected in a paperback (SEP15 1548, Pop! Goes the Icon, $12.99, November) with some additional bonus material.
