Harley Quinn Movie Possibility Brings Another Female Lead

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad

The Hollywood Reporter yesterday broke the news that “months ahead of the opening of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. is already contemplating a spinoff for the DC Entertainment anti-heroine, Harley Quinn.” Margot Robbie plays the crazy character, and she will produce the proposed film as well. She discovered how great DC’s female characters are while researching her role, and she developed the project and brought it to Warners.

Harley’s sense of weird and wacky flippancy fits right in with the attitude that made Deadpool a huge movie hit. And more excitingly, a female writer is working on the film, which would “focus on several of DC’s female heroes and villains…. names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey have surfaced, although in what capacity, it’s not clear. Warner Bros. isn’t commenting.”

As for my headline… I’m referring to the modern era, of course, as kicked off by Marvel Studios’ Iron Man in 2008 (which rescued us from previous films such as Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, and Spider-Man 3). Of course, prior to that there was a notorious Catwoman movie — like Harley, an anti-hero/redeemed villain — and Elektra as a Daredevil sequel.

We’ve been promised a Wonder Woman next year, a co-titled Wasp in Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2018, and Captain Marvel in 2019, but plenty of fans are hungry for more female-led superhero projects, asking such questions as why Marvel hasn’t scheduled a Black Widow movie already (although they’re reportedly working on one). Harley Quinn is quite a popular character, with plenty of merchandise already, so highlighting her on film would be a smart choice.
