DC Super Hero Girls Come to DVD

DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year

Warner Bros. Animation has announced that the DC Super Hero Girls, the branding program with toys, dolls, and books featuring younger, cuter, more covered versions of DC female heroes, will have a movie released in August.

DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year is due out August 23 on DVD with an earlier Digital HD availability date of August 9. Like the other products, this direct-to-video movie is aimed at girls 6-12. The teen characters attend Super Hero High, where they have adventures and learn how to handle their powers and abilities.

Featured characters include Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Bumblebee, Poison Ivy, and Katana. Wonder Woman (voiced by Grey Griffin) is the super-strong leader. Batgirl (Mae Whitman) is praised for her brainpower and expert martial arts skills. Supergirl (Anais Fairweather) was made “incredibly clumsy” to keep her powers from solving every problem immediately. Harley Quinn (Tara Strong) is the class clown, a sneaky prankster. Bumblebee (Teala Dunn) has shrinking powers. Katana (Stephanie Sheh) is called a “martial arts fashionista” while Poison Ivy (Tara Strong) is “blossoming into her new life.” Here’s the trailer:

You’ll notice that more female heroes mean more female villains, since they rarely have the girls fight guys. Here, they’ve made Eclipso into a woman, and there’s a reference to Dark Opal, a former Amethyst character. (They similarly feature villainous women on the Supergirl TV show, although there, it means pulling more female characters from DC continuity, including Livewire, Silver Banshee, Maxima, and a female Brainiac named Indigo.)

Special Features include six animated shorts, some of which you can watch (in multiple languages) on the DC Super Hero Girls YouTube channel:

  • Hero of the Month: Wonder Woman
  • Fall into Super Hero High
  • Hero of the Month: Bumblebee
  • Hero of the Month: Poison Ivy
  • Clubbing
  • Saving the Day

They’re also promoting that more “animated shorts and TV specials will continue to release over the next year”. In the meantime, the graphic novel DC Super Hero Girls: Finals Crisis, by Shea Fontana and Yancey Labat, comes out July 5. There’s already been a prose novel, Wonder Woman at Super Hero High, which was published in March, and a followup, Supergirl at Super Hero High, is also due out July 5.
