Master of Visual Effects Honored on Comet TV in May

From Jason and the Argonauts

Comet TV has announced its feature schedule for May, and the focus is on Ray Harryhausen, the master of using stop-motion animation to bring to life such imaginative effects as sword-fighting skeletons.

There’s a marathon of four films where he created the visual effects on Sunday, May 7, with repeats later in the month. The movies are

  • The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958)
  • The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973)
  • The Three Worlds of Gulliver (1960)
  • Jason and the Argonauts (1963) (the one with the skeletons)

From Jason and the Argonauts

(I wish they were showing the 1949 Mighty Joe Young, his first major effects work, since I like the giant monkey.)

From The 7th Voyage of Sinbad

Not a giant monkey, but a monster from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad

Two other effects favorites, but with nothing to do with Harryhausen, are also airing on Comet TV this month: Labyrinth (starting May 12) and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (May 26).
