Viz Reprinting 20th Century Boys in Deluxe Paperback

Viz Media announced at New York Comic Con, among many other bits of news, that they will be re-releasing another series by Naoki Urasawa, as they did for his Monster.

(Update: This story has been revised. The reprints will be in paperback, not hardcover.)

Similar to that reprint, the 20th Century Boys re-release will be in double-length softcovers, titled 20th Century Boys: The Perfect Edition. The series ran in English as 22 volumes published from 2009-2012, and this new reprint should be 11 books. (A similar edition is starting to be released in Spain this month.) It will begin in Fall 2018.

Based on that count, I suspect this version will not include the two-volume follow-up 21st Century Boys, but there might be extras. We’ll have to wait on a more formal announcement to find out.

Update: 21st Century Boys: The Perfect Edition has also been announced, collecting those two volumes.

20th Century Boys is a sprawling story about a convenience store worker trying to stop a world-wide conspiracy, peppered with plenty of flashbacks to his youth and the dreams he and his friends had. They created a symbol then that has since been adopted by the cult behind a series of mysterious deaths. This epic manga tackles what happens to dreams when we grow up, an increasing feeling of isolation and a need to belong, and rock and roll-fueled rebellion.

Update: The first volume is now available for order from your local comic shop with Diamond code JUL18 2349. It’s 416 pages for $19.99 and will be out September 18 with some color pages.

I think the original series, but had the chance to see and hold this yesterday at Westfield East and it’s a very nice package. Love the embossed cover!
