Scooby-Doo Team-Up #34

Scooby-Doo Team-Up #34

The high point of my DC comics purchases these days is this goofy “kids’ comic” that gets the superhero cast right, i.e. as I think they should be in terms of heroism, entertainment, and good character.

Imagine my glee when I saw that the latest “guest star” was the female-focused Birds of Prey. In this story by Sholly Fisch and Dario Brizuela, Batgirl and Black Canary have asked for Velma and Daphne’s help in investigating why huge mythological birds are attacking Gotham City. And for some reason, Scooby tags along.

Meanwhile, the guys are investigating the “living ragdoll” Brother Power, The Geek. Fisch apparently knows his DC history well, and his passing references are often hilarious. (Although I wish they’d have used any other of the Huntress costumes, since it’s just weird seeing that much skin in this setting. And why couldn’t the girls have made the cover?)

The dynamics change in interesting fashion when you split the team up, since the girls are the competent ones, so there’s a lot more mystery solving. It’s complicated by the presence of an actual supervillain, which makes the threat a lot more substantial than your traditional Scooby Gang case. It’s a pleasant change, with plenty of action and a great, surprising cameo (in keeping with the “bird-named female characters” theme) that made me cheer. Lots of fun!

It is “Scooby-Doo Team-Up” and not “Mystery Inc. Team-Up”.

I am wondering about the Fred analogue.

I love this title!!! Scooby Doo Team Up is not only my favorite DC title (from any of their imprints), but it is my favorite title being published right now!!! I agree that the heroes that show up in this title are “my” heroes and the title can tell all types of stories without losing the sense of fun and wonder that is far too often missing in comics today. I also love all the easter eggs and shout outs to long time DC fans. They aren’t essential to the story, but for those of us who have been around a while, they certainly are appreciated!
