IDW Announces Weekly Sonic Comic for Relaunch

Sonic the Hedgehog #1

After a year’s hiatus since Archie Comics lost the license, IDW has announced their plans for Sonic the Hedgehog as its new publisher.

They will release the first four issues in April, with the series running weekly that month. The series returns to monthly with issue #5 in May.

Each issue in April will feature Sonic teaming up with a different ally: Tails, Amy Rose, Knuckles the Echidna, plus the introduction of a brand new character, Tangle, who will make her debut in Sonic the Hedgehog #4.

Ian Flynn, who wrote the series for Archie, will return as writer. Various artists will contribute, due to the monthly schedule:

  • Tracy Yardley (interior art on issue 1)
  • Adam Bryce Thomas (issue 2)
  • Jen Hernandez (issue 3)
  • Evan Stanley (issue 4)
  • Tyson Hesse (main covers)

Additional artists will contribute variant covers, including Nathalie Fourdraine (all 4 issues), Rafa Knight (issue 1), Jonathan Gray (issue 2), Jamal Peppers (issue 3), and Sonic Mania artist Kieran Gates (issue 1). All four issues are available for order now from comic shops.

The publisher acknowledges how important fandom is to the success of this title:

“I’ve been working in comics for about 15 years, and my interactions with Sonic fans has been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in my career — and I mean that in the best possible way,” said series editor Joe Hughes. “The further we get into this, the more we realize what a responsibility it is to give a fan base this passionate and loyal the kinds of stories that they deserve. We’ve barely gotten started, and it’s already so much fun. The fans have been nothing short of amazing, and we’re genuinely grateful to be welcomed into their tribe.”

  • Nice to see they brought Flynn over. I never got around to reading his Sonic or Mega Man comics, but I consistently heard good things, and I know there was significant fan demand to carry him over to the new series.
