The Unstoppable Wasp #5

The Unstoppable Wasp #5 is a Very Special issue that explores bipolar disorder. Nadia, the new Wasp, in a manic episode, doesn’t realize that her compulsion to protect her friends is actually hurting them. It’s written by Jeremy Whitley with art by Gurihiru. I’ve been fascinated by a similar idea since Hal Jordan became Parallax in Zero Hour. Superheroes are vigilantes, which means by definition, they rely on their own judgement of what’s right and wrong without an established structure […]

Captain Marvel #1

It is so great to have a new series launching in connection with a big-screen movie that is so very readable and approachable! I knew that would be the case, though, since it’s written by Kelly Thompson (Jem and the Holograms, Nancy Drew, A-Force), who does a wonderful job modernizing concepts, particularly those revolving around female friendship. And that’s what won me over here, that the opening fight, against a sea monster, teams up Captain Marvel with Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman. […]

Dark Horse to Release Food Manga About Ramen

Food manga is my favorite manga category. Whether it’s the heartwarming family cooking of Sweetness & Lightning or What Did You Eat Yesterday? or the fantasy of Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu or the solo woman restaurant visits of Not Love But Delicious Foods Make Me So Happy! or Wakako Zake, sharing the vicarious experience of a tasty meal is a great read. So I’m glad to hear that Dark Horse will be releasing its first food manga, Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen […]

More News on Aria’s Return

In an interview with Stu Levy at ICv2, the Tokyopop CEO gave some more information about the company’s plans to reprint Aria. Kozue Amano’s Aria (and its two-volume predecessor series Aqua) was a beautifully illustrated light science fiction series about girl gondoliers on a future Mars that looked a lot like historical Europe. The appeal to me was the mood it created, about appreciating nature, seasonal change, and the small moments of daily life. The first three volumes were first […]

Usagi Yojimbo Leaves Dark Horse

This is a change I was not expecting. Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo is an incredibly long-running, award-winning, wonderfully drawn series about a samurai rabbit in an historical Japan where everyone is an animal. It has been published by Dark Horse since 1996 (although previous runs were put out by Fantagraphics and Mirage in the decade before that). IDW has just announced that, beginning in June, the series will be published by them. Usagi Yojimbo will now be monthly, in full […]

Orange: The Complete Collection

After giving up on Ichigo Takano’s Dreamin’ Sun, I thought I’d try their Orange, because I was intrigued by the time travel aspect. (There’s a mini-boom in these “what if I knew then what I know now” manga, including Again!! and Erased.) Naho is a 16-year-old high schooler who gets a letter that says it’s from herself ten years in the future. It tells her not to invite new student Naruse to walk home with her and her group of […]

Are IDW’s Money Problems Delaying Wynonna Earp’s Next Season?

Wynonna Earp was supposed to start shooting season 4 this month, but production has been delayed, with no specific date set. Syfy renewed it at last summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, but speculation at Vulture has it that Money problems at IDW seem to be the cause of the production delay. According to a public filing posted in late December, the company has had to take out some hefty loans, and the filing cites a “need for a cash infusion.” Plus, […]

Comic Shop: The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us a New Geek Culture

The upcoming paperback release of Comic Shop: The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us a New Geek Culture by Dan Gearino prompted me to finally read the hardcover I was sent a year and a half ago. Boy, that was a comprehensive trip through comic industry history! Gearino, a business journalist from Columbus, Ohio, puts local store The Laughing Ogre in the center of his history of how the direct market, the non-returnable distribution system for comic books, began and changed […]
