Everyone’s Getting Married Volume 9

Everyone’s Getting Married Volume 9

Unlike my usual practice, this discussion of Everyone’s Getting Married volume 9 will not avoid spoilers. It’s the final volume of the series, anyway, and the happy ending is given away right there on the cover.

When we left our troubled couple of Asuka and Ryu at the end of volume 8, she had just declared her intention to break up with him, since he was working for several years in the US and she thought she was distracting him from his career. She does, because that’s how much she loves him, but in the long run, their separation doesn’t matter. It does allow for a romantic showdown with rival Kamiya, though, which serves to demonstrate that being with the wrong man isn’t better than being with no one.

Everyone’s Getting Married Volume 9

This ultimate message of this series seems to be “even if he says he doesn’t want to get married, give it five years and he’ll come around”. This isn’t particularly realistic, with the time jump to smooth over issues and the eventual reunion, nor does it have the emotional tension of the original premise. But it is rewarding for followers of the series, with the couple’s happy ending, particularly since their reunion takes place at a friend’s wedding, which echoes where they met.

This volume didn’t have the substantial character work I liked about the earlier books in the series, feeling rather rushed to get to the marriage and kids, but I’m glad to see an adult romance series get translated over here, and I’d like to see more.
