Boom! Skilled at Creating New Tie-Ins for Giant Days and Lumberjanes

Encyclopedia Lumberjanica

Gotta admire Boom! for not being afraid to create tie-ins and spin-offs for some of their most beloved comic titles.

Their most popular series is probably Lumberjanes; even though the planned live-action movie has been canceled (a casualty of Disney’s acquisition of Fox), there are still series of young adult prose stories and original graphic novels telling more stories of the group of campers who bond together against mystical and supernatural threats.

Coming this fall will be The Encyclopedia Lumberjanica: An Illustrated Guide to the Hardcore Lady-Types of Lumberjanes. Due out in September, writer Susan Coiner-Collier will provide write-ups of various role models for the characters. No word on who’s providing the illustrations — perhaps they’ll use clip art or panels from the comics — but they’re promising to include “fun facts and humorous insights from the Lumberjanes themselves!” It’s billed as “perfect for teachers and caregivers, and an unforgettable keepsake for Lumberjanes fans.”

The Lumberjanes are also headlining a Free Comic Book Day giveaway book this May. I hope the title, Farewell to Summer, doesn’t indicate that the series is ending, but all good things must come to an end. The “all-new free comic book special [is] written and illustrated by acclaimed comics creators including Aubrey Aiese, Dozerdraws, Maarta Laiho, Carolyn Nowak, polterink, Sarah Stern, and co-creator and original Lumberjanes artist Brooklyn Allen”.

Speaking of endings, my favorite Boom! series, Giant Days, recently concluded. It was about three young women building friendship and growing up during their time at university. There’s also been a young adult novel (which I’ve heard nothing about, so I have no idea how well it was received), and now, they’ve announced something a little more on point.

The Quotable Giant Days, collecting witty and humorous quotes from the Eisner Award-nominated series by creator John Allison and featuring brand new illustrations from acclaimed series artist Max Sarin to guide you through the ups and downs of living your life to its fullest [will be] available in stores July 2020.

That should be an entertaining blend of wisdom of humor, since that’s what kept me involved in the series. It can be preordered now from your local comic shop with Diamond code MAR20 1359.
