LyricPop Picture Books Turn Songs Into Kids’ Stories

Respect (LyricPop)

We’ve had kids’ books based on movie and TV shows. Now, in the next step for parents wanting to keep their pop culture front and center in their kids’ lives, Akashic Books has launched the LyricPop line of children’s picture books.

The lyrics of classic pop songs — including Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop“, the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations“, Otis Redding’s “Respect“, The Go-gos’ “We Got the Beat“, and (most amusingly to me) Dee Snider’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” — form the basics for illustrated stories.

We're Not Gonna Take It

There are eight in the line so far, with more coming. “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay” and “Humble and Kind” are due out in March, with five more — including “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy)“, “Dream Weaver“, “I Will Survive“, and songs from Coldplay and the Pixies — next June.

The releases, ranging across rock, country, hip hop, reggae, and more, aim to demonstrate a diverse love of music.
