DC Universe Infinite Puts Out One-Day Discount Today

With everyone rightly complaining about how badly Amazon has broken ComiXology — the latest annoyance is that no specific links work any more, so if you ever referred an issue to anyone with a link to that title, too bad — DC Universe Infinite, the DC-specific digital comic site, has announced a one-day discount if you’re willing to sign up for a year. They’re offering

50% off annual subscriptions for all new and returning subscribers for a limited time. You can enjoy reading over 25,000 comics on iOS, Android, and web devices for just $37.49, plus applicable taxes, for your first year [with] promo code FLASHSALE31 beginning on March 1, 2022.

That’s just about $3 a month, which is less than the cost of a single issue of many of their comics these days. That’s a smart way to sign up subscribers — given recent events, there is clearly a pool of digital comic readers eager to find an alternative to the former industry leader.

The problem is that you have to wait to read them, as these “all you can read” services have delays before making issues available to avoid undercutting print sales. This whole thing is making me wonder, though, how much longer the comic book issue will survive as a format. There’s a whole ton of inertia and nostalgia under it, but it’s such an unwieldy product — costly, easily damaged, not satisfying in itself to read… an awful lot of business depends on it, though.
