The Adventures of Superhero Girl

You can read Faith Erin Hicks’ Superhero Girl online, but when the book is this pretty, I’d rather hold it in my hands. Some of these strips were previously available in a self-published collection, but The Adventures of Superhero Girl has more of the comics, plus it’s in color. Kurt Busiek’s introduction makes some wonderful points about how a funny superhero story that stands on its own isn’t necessarily a parody — it just seems that way if you read […]

The Initiates

Although subtitled “A Comic Artist and a Wine Artisan Exchange Jobs”, I learned more about winemaking than comic creating in The Initiates. And that was great, because I already know about graphic novels, and the lessons imparted by Etienne Davodeau about the patience and craft need for fine wine were welcome and insightful. Author Davodeau proposed to Richard Leroy an exchange of knowledge. Davodeau will come work in Leroy’s vineyard, and Leroy will explain wine making and tasting to him. […]

Angel & Faith #19-20

Yay! Spike is back! He’s always been my favorite of the Buffyverse characters, mostly due to his wide-ranging character arc, from super-scary Big Bad to victim to lovestruck sex slave to redeemed savior of the world. That he’s not one of the biggest main characters allows writers to do more with him, too. Plus, his original attitude lets him snark off at the others when they’re being particularly drippy or self-obsessed, often reflecting the attitudes of the viewers. Issue #19 […]

Marvel Heroine Novels to Feature She-Hulk, Rogue

Marvel has announced that Hyperion Books, another Disney division, will be publishing two prose novels focused on “strong, smart heroines seeking happiness and love while battling cosmic evil.” The She-Hulk Diaries is clearly taking a “Sex in the City” approach, described as follows: Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, juggles climbing the corporate ladder by day and battling villains and saving the world by night — all while trying to navigate the dating world to find a Mr. Right who might not […]

Tired of Grim DC? Check Out the Retro Book Batman ’66

I noticed, while reading the March Previews, that DC now has eight digital-first comic series (books that come to print by collecting stories that were released online for sale first), and half of them are Batman-related. Some are even kid-friendly or a video-game tie-in. Clearly, this is an area where they’re not afraid to experiment. The wider audience available digitally means books aimed at a more diverse market (in taste as well as age). And I’m glad, because it’s a […]

Message to Adolf Volume 2

It shouldn’t surprise me that I enjoyed the first volume more than this one. If you’re trying to build excitement, it’s a lot easier to keep introducing new twists and turns than to wrap them up in coherent fashion. Plus, there are a lot of years of war still to cover, although we do get quite the time jump on several occasions. I’m sure the experience would have been much different, and perhaps preferable, if I wasn’t reading all these […]

Wonder Women!: The Untold Story of American Superheroines

Yesterday, my local library had a showing of Wonder Women!: The Untold Story of American Superheroines, a documentary covering the origin of the first female superhero, her legacy as an inspiration, and the necessity of powerful fantasy figures for women and girls. There was a lot more about the comics than I expected, although it was well mixed with information on feminism and portrayals of women in media. In addition to the expected comic-related commentators — Trina Robbins, of course, […]

JManga, Online Manga Service, Shuts Down Abruptly

JManga launched in August 2011 as a digital portal for selling online manga, often titles not available in English in print. Last night came news that it was suddenly shutting down. Points are no longer available for purchase. “Purchases” with existing point balances can be made through Tuesday, March 26, but since all viewing is online, you will only be able to read the titles before May 30, at which point it all shuts down. An apology was included in […]
