NBM: Little Nothings 2, Miss Don’t Touch Me, Why I Killed Peter, First Time

The following books were provided by the publisher NBM. Little Nothings: The Prisoner Syndrome by Lewis Trondheim, color paperback, $14.95 US This second volume of Little Nothings continues where the first left off, reprinting more material from Trondheim’s comic blog. The work is gorgeous, due to the artist’s skill, observations, and especially watercolors. Material includes the goofy things Trondheim’s bird-headed alter ego does on vacation, as well as simple observations about everyday life. I found them fresh and funny, showing […]

Aria Volume 4

After some trouble, I finally found a copy of the latest chapter of this gorgeous series. As volume 4 begins, it’s summer on Aqua, and Akari and her fellow gondolier trainees Aika and Alice vacation on a small island. Yes, it’s a bathing suit chapter, but the clothes are reasonable, and instead of body parts, the emphasis is on the fun and relaxation of the beach. The younger girls have never swum in an ocean before, and their feelings of […]

Archie Sales Figures for 2008

It’s that time of year again. Due to the way they mail subscriptions, Archie Comics are required to file Statements of Ownership, Management, and Circulation in their publications. So I collect the figures to see how an often-overlooked comic franchise is doing. These are the Total Paid and/or Requested Circulation figures that Archie files with the government. The first number is the Average No. Copies Each Issue During Preceding 12 Months; the second is No. Copies of Single Issue Published […]

Global Frequency

Global Frequency was a group of 1001 individuals (“freaks, geeks, and security risks”) from around the world. Each was an expert in some technology or ability, and each was given a special cellphone. When it rang, they’d be called into action to save the world from a bleeding-edge threat that normal people didn’t even understand. Writer Warren Ellis used this premise to explore various science fiction concepts. Each of the 12 issues was a standalone story illustrated by a different […]

Wonder Woman (The DVD Movie)

Well, that was disappointing. I knew that watching Wonder Woman’s origin story made into an animated film would have some overly familiar bits, but I didn’t expect to be so put off by the attempts to make it new and modern. The movie starts with Hippolyta and Ares fighting. As someone who’s not particularly interested in Greek/Roman mythology, I was bored waiting for the title woman in the costume to show up. Instead, we got battle, clay baby, Amazon bickering, […]

Disney Eliminates Standard DVD Review Copies for Pinocchio

Here’s another piece of evidence for studios trying to shove the Blu-ray format down the customer’s throat: I just got notified that, when it comes to review copies of the upcoming Disney release Pinocchio 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition, the company will ONLY provide the Blu-ray version. Disney is shipping a standard DVD copy of the movie with all of their Blu-rays these days. As their press materials put it, this “allow[s] viewers the opportunity to enjoy Pinocchio on a standard […]

Comic Foundry: How I Will Miss You

I eagerly dove into the final issue of Comic Foundry. I’m hugely disappointed that, now that it’s clearly become the best magazine about comics out there, that it’s ending, but that’s no reason not to enjoy these last few bon-bons. The thing I liked most about Comic Foundry was that it covered things no one else was talking about. The books they profiled were both good-looking and, in many cases, new to me (which is rare). Their coverage made me […]
