Female Archie, Male Betty and Veronica to Hit Stands in August

Archie Comics continues to aim for stories that will get them free publicity. This time it’s gender-swapping. Per Comics Alliance, Archie #636, due in August, will feature a female Archina and her boyfriends Billy and Ronnie. Sabrina the Teenage Witch is involved, as her cat wants to show them how the other half lives and she has to flip them back. There will be two covers, with the variant (shown second below) giving female Archie a particularly weird expression. The […]

The Secret World of Arrietty Clips

The Secret World of Arrietty, the newest Studio Ghibli movie, is out today, and I’m bummed that I’m too sick to go. To whet my appetite for it (and yours), here’s a series of promo clips provided by Disney (the U.S. distributor). Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler) and her parents (Amy Poehler and Will Arnett) discuss the addition of a new member to the “human bean” household, a boy: The change doesn’t stop Arrietty and her father from going after a sugar […]

I’m Part of Love and Capes Now!

Thom Zahler offered a chance to buy his MegaCon Orlando print and get drawn in line with Mark and Abby, so that’s me and KC there on the left. (In green and purple. Together, we’re a supervillain.) I’m thrilled to be part of the Love and Capes universe, since it’s one of my favorite comics going right now, never failing to make me smile. And since KC and I spent our tenth anniversary at the park that shall not be […]

Kate Beaton Draws Reading

Kate Beaton (Hark! A Vagrant) writes and draws about her reading style for The Globe and Mail. (Via Tom Spurgeon.) This illustration shows both her facility for capturing movement beautifully and her own twitchy poses. I can relate, especially that last one with the little stars. Ah, iconic cartoon language!

Ever Feel Like a Dinosaur?

It’s almost the end of another year, and as is so typical of these times, I look back and think about years past. The older I get, sometimes, the older I feel. I was email chatting with Rob Walton (the talented cartoonist and animator behind Ragmop) about some of the recent changes in the comic industry, especially those involving restarts and reboots. I said something about “us dinosaurs have to stick together”, and in return, I got this charming cartoon […]

Preview Archie #627, Where Archie Meets KISS

As announced this summer, tomorrow’s Archie #627 is part one of the “Archie Meets KISS” storyline, “Riverdale Rock City”. The publisher has provided the following preview story pages. As you can see, we don’t really meet KISS yet, although the situation is set up: Sabrina and the “Riverdale Monster Society” — a new invention that tells us that Archie and his buddies, including super-scientific Dilton, now a) know Sabrina the Teenage Witch, b) know she’s a witch, and c) believe […]

Congratulations, Stan Sakai, on 200 Issues of Usagi Yojimbo!

The latest Usagi Yojimbo, #141, marks the 200th issue of the series overall. Issue #141, out now, is a stand-alone story, “200 Buddhas”, about a village terrorized by a gang and a kindly stonecutter who takes in the rabbit ronin. The stonecutter looks a bit familiar to fans of Mr. Sakai, and here, in the final page of the issue (which doesn’t spoil anything about the story), we get a wonderful message to readers and a lovely celebration of the […]
