Peter Quach is publishing a page a week of his webcomic Freedman, the story of a former slave attempting to … well, we don’t know quite yet, but I bet it involves his departed wife and revenge. It’s set in Texas just past the Civil War, when the country was still dealing with emancipation. 12 pages are posted so far, and he plans to complete it over the next five months.

Sean O’Neill is working on a historical adventure graphic novel called Rocket Robinson and the Pharaoh’s Fortune that he’s serializing online, with over three chapters posted so far. If you know a boy who would love Indiana Jones as Tintin in 1933 Cairo, this is the comic for him. (O’Neill is thoughtful enough to include a statement for parents.)

I have been woefully remiss in not yet writing about the excellent Blacksad, which came out earlier this summer in hardcover from Dark Horse. The comic, written by Juan Díaz Canales and illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido, beautifully blends private eye noir with anthropomorphism.
