DC Women in Sweaters — A Wonderful Welcome to Autumn

This is the best character redesign set ever! Hanie Mohd has drawn a bunch of DC favorite characters — Batgirl, Supergirl, Catwoman, and others — dressed more warmly for winter. Along the way, she captures some of the key characteristics that differentiate these women: Supergirl’s playfulness, Oracle’s knowledge, Batgirl’s youth, and so on. That’s a Project Rooftop post, but the artist has since posted more at her tumblr: Zatanna, Vixen (love the coat!), Donna Troy. I wish I could buy […]

Exclusive Preview of Princeless, Due in October — Recommended!

Princeless is a new four-issue miniseries that I’m quite taken with. The first issue is available for order now from Action Lab Entertainment, Diamond code AUG11 0748, $3.99 US. Written by Jeremy Whitley and drawn and colored by M. Goodwin, it will be available in stores in October. As you can read in this four-page preview of the book’s opening pages, it’s a funny revamp take on the traditional fairytale story. Princess Adrienne is full of energy and will, so […]

Civil War Webcomic Freedman Follows Former Slave

Peter Quach is publishing a page a week of his webcomic Freedman, the story of a former slave attempting to … well, we don’t know quite yet, but I bet it involves his departed wife and revenge. It’s set in Texas just past the Civil War, when the country was still dealing with emancipation. 12 pages are posted so far, and he plans to complete it over the next five months.

Smbitten Gorgeous Webcomic

Melanie Gillman, as part of mini-thesis work at The Center for Cartoon Studies, is creating “a 60-70 page, all colored pencil, hand-stitched minicomic novella, about a certain mythical creature and a certain minority sexuality that I’ve been dropping hints about for the past several weeks.” (Hint: The comic’s tag is “lesbian vampires”.) It’s called Smbitten, and I’m blown away by the gorgeous coloring, as well as the fun historical setting and the joy of the characters when they dance.

Blacksad Preview Pages

I have been woefully remiss in not yet writing about the excellent Blacksad, which came out earlier this summer in hardcover from Dark Horse. The comic, written by Juan Díaz Canales and illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido, beautifully blends private eye noir with anthropomorphism. The book collects three stories, the last of which, “Red Soul”, hasn’t been presented in English before. Here’s the official promotional description: Private investigator John Blacksad is up to his feline ears in mystery, digging into the […]

Read a Complete Beasts of Burden Story

Out this week is Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites, the gorgeous graphic novel by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson about dogs who fight mystical forces. (But that description doesn’t do the series justice, or attest to the immense creative skill on display here.) The book collects the four issue miniseries along with the earlier short stories from the various Dark Horse Book of … anthologies. This complete story, “Stray”, provided by Dark Horse, originally appeared in The Dark Horse Book […]

Archie on the Cover of Rolling Stone

To promote Archie #608, out April 21, Archie Comics has released this Rolling Stone magazine cover mockup hinting at the romance story between Archie and Valerie. These kinds of mashups make me giggle. And you know, there is so much more Archie could be doing with the Pussycats characters, in a world of Pussycat Dolls. I like that the company describes Valerie as the “beautiful songwriter/bassist” of the band, emphasizing her creative abilities. In this story, the Archies band and […]
