No Girls Allowed Awards

Wonder why we need Friends of Lulu awards specifically for girls? Because the “regular” awards wind up ignoring them. Here’s the announcement of voting starting for the CBG Fan Awards. Now, bearing in mind the magazine’s likely audience, this is coming from a bunch of older white males, and it’s almost exclusively DC/Marvel, but still… out of 5 nominations each in 7 creator categories, there are 2 women total listed, both as colorists. (Girls get to use the crayons, but […]

Speakeasy Shutdown Shocker!

I just received this in email from Vito Delsante: As unofficial public relations for Speakeasy Comics, I feel it is my duty to inform everyone that as of 3:30 PM today, Speakeasy Comics has shut its doors and will not be publishing comics for, at the very least, the rest of the year. Most, if not all, creators have been contacted and informed. If I’m not mistaken, all books scheduled to ship in March will ship. April and May books […]

Waiting for Planetary

Dave Lewis ponders Waiting for Planetary in a piece (link no longer available) that explores the nature of serial comics. I wonder now if Planetary shouldn’t be kept off schedule. I wonder now how long we can delay the inevitable. I wonder if, with less than a half-dozen issues remaining, how many more years Planetary can be sustained. It sounds tongue-in-cheek, I know, but I’m being sincere. Has anyone stopped buying Planetary because of the delays? Have stores stopped ordering […]

Ignore Captain Carrot’s Return

The Howling Curmudgeons point out the many many things wrong with Geoff Johns’ return of Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew. Personally, I thought the last page was the best example of why people say “show, don’t tell” I’ve seen in a long while. It’s nothing but characters telling each other what had happened previously. BORRRRRRING! And unnecessarily nasty, like so many DC comics these days, and completely unbelievable if you knew anything about the characters before this issue. […]

Speakeasy Blog Shut Down?

While taking cheap shots at Speakeasy in my previews writeup (coming soon), I tried to visit Jonathan Martin’s Speakeasy update blog only to discover that it no longer existed. Wikipedia reports Jonathan Martin’s “Speakeasy Comics Archive” (a blog dedicated to Speakeasy-related news) was shut down, presumably under “trademark infringement” litigation. Does anyone know anything more about this? Jonathan, are you out there to comment? If it’s true that Speakeasy legally pressured someone who was exercising free speech in commenting on […]

Sexual Harassment Reactions

Laura Gjovaag has a powerful emotional response to recent stories of sexual harassment. She comes to the conclusion that Superheroes are constrained by their own success. And it’s a dubious success at that. As long as superheroes dominate the market, the stories will continue to pander to the fanboys… the lowest common denominator of the fanboys. They will continue to be the kind of stories that embarrass the casual reader and drive people away. And they will continue to be […]
