Mike Dawson Kickstarts Rules for Dating My Daughter

Last year, I linked to a comic strip Mike Dawson posted at The Nib titled “Rules For Dating My Daughter“. Now, he’s taken that same title for a book of similar comic essays, due out next March. He describes it as “a collection of thematically linked essays on parenting, politics, and philosophy”, reprinting work from The Comics Journal, Slate, and The Nib along with new comics. Dawson is Kickstarting the book, and he’s already made his goal. You have eight […]

Order These Comics! Coming November 2015

From the September Previews catalog, for books shipping November 2015 or later. It’s a light month, since many of the holiday items were offered in the last catalog, so just a few recommendations this time around. News Items Capitalizing on the iZombie TV show, DC brings all the iZombie Vertigo comics back into print in one giant hardcover omnibus (SEP15 0327, $75, December) with all 28 issues. It’s pricey, but it’s smart to make it all or nothing, since the […]

The Last Domino: Dark Horse Joins ComiXology

This news came out two months ago, but I wanted to capture it here, because I think it’s significant. On June 22, it was announced that Dark Horse, who previously had established their own digital comic distribution platform, would make “their full digital catalog of collections, graphic novels, and manga” available via ComiXology. Dark Horse was the last large major comic publisher to not be available on the de facto monopoly digital distributor. We were told “all Dark Horse Comics […]

Small Press Expo a Month Away — Guests and Award Nominees

The Small Press Expo is always one of the highlights of my comic-show-going every year. It’s a terrific way to find many amazing comics and interact directly with the artists or publishers. SPX is celebrating its 21st birthday this year, and so the show is planning to spotlight creators who have only worked in the 21st century, which seems a clever way to keep the focus looking forward and feature younger creators. Those special guests announced so far include: Kate […]

Wizard World Chicago This Weekend

Wizard World Comic Con Chicago is this coming weekend — only it’s longer than that now. I hadn’t realized that they’d expanded the show to include 5 hours on Thursday as well as all-day Friday through Sunday. Their website is showing that four-day passes are sold out, but one-day tickets are still available (ranging from $40-60, depending on day), as are most of the upgraded VIP packages. Programming has been announced, with the highlight on Q&A sessions with the various […]

Order These Comics! Coming October 2015

I haven’t done this for a while, but it’s a new site layout, and there are some comics worth paying attention to in the August Previews catalog, for books shipping October 2015 or later. News Items A new Finder story, “Torch”, by Carla Speed McNeil begins serialization in Dark Horse Presents #15 (AUG15 0042, due out October 21, $4.99). Here’s an online preview. It follows on from Third World (good, since that ended on a cliffhanger) and tells the story […]

Trouble With Comics Returns, and I Helped (a Tiny Bit)

Alan David Doane has resurrected Trouble With Comics, a group-contribution comic website with reviews, commentary, and links. Here’s the core list of contributors. It’s kind of old-fashioned in that it’s all guys, but it’s also nostalgic, since these folks all worked together before Tumblr and Twitter took off. There’s a lot of knowledge and history in that group. I’ll be contributing, although on a very limited basis, since I’m still trying to get back into a working groove on THIS […]

You Can’t Make Money as a Comic Book Artist

Brian Churilla has posted a sobering analysis of his life as a full-time comic book artist. He drew 12 issues of Big Trouble in Little China and is currently illustrating Hellbreak. He’s also written a breakdown any aspiring comic book artist should read. He covers how much typical artists get paid compared to the amount of work they’re expected to do. Here are some excerpts, but be sure to read the whole thing: One year. 12 issues. 264 pages. 4 […]
