MoCCA Fest is two weeks away, so the programming is now available for Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6. If you want to see “Alison Bechdel and Howard Cruse in Conversation” or “Art Spiegelman and Joost Swarte in Conversation” (each 90 minutes), you need to reserve a free ticket on the website, “with any remaining seating to be filled on a first-come, first-served […]

Convention Season Begins With MoCCA Fest

I’ve put together plans to attend my first show of the season, MoCCA Fest 2014, held April 5 and 6 this year in New York City. The show is put on by the Society of Illustrators/Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and it’s terrific. I had a fabulous time last year. This year, as before, there will be awards, a fascinating, diverse group of guests of honor, an art gallery, and as a crowning touch, a reasonably priced on-site cafe. […]

Lena Dunham Working on Archie Comic; Archie Names Chief Creative Officer

In this New York Times article about Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa becoming the new Chief Creative Officer for Archie Comics, there’s an interesting tidbit near the end. Lena Dunham, creator and star of the much-discussed HBO sitcom Girls, will be writing an Archie story for 2015. Seems she’s a long-time fan and owns “the first Archie comic”. The majority of the story, though is about Aguirre-Sacasa being asked “to figure out the best way to exploit the company’s characters in comics, of […]

Diamond Digital Calls It Quits

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Diamond Digital program, announced three years ago, is ending. This isn’t a surprise. It took them longer than expected to get off the ground, and with ComiXology’s early lead in digital distribution, including its own retailer offering, there was a lot of competition. One of the big issues was that DC and Marvel had contracts with ComiXology and weren’t available for Diamond to offer. Those publishers are the two biggest reasons customers think of […]

Top Shelf Adds DRM-Free Graphic Novel Purchases to Website

Following in the footsteps of Image Comics, Top Shelf has announced that they will be selling DRM-free digital graphic novels direct from their website. They will continue selling through various partners, as well, but setting up their own digital store (with choices of PDF, ePub, or CBZ) allows them to sell bundles — if you buy print direct from them, the digital version is also available for a small add-on price. The first titles in the program (which seem to […]

Watson and Holmes Ends Print Serialization, Returns to Digital

I’ve enjoyed the issues of Watson and Holmes I’ve read. It’s a new, urban take on the classic Sherlock Holmes setup — the characters are black, it’s set in Harlem in New York City, and Watson (who’s intended to be an equal character, thus the billing flip) is a medical intern returned from Air Force service in Afghanistan. The comic started as a Kickstarted digital miniseries, but it was so successful that they announced plans for an ongoing print comic […]
