Two 47 Ronin Graphic Novels Due to Movie

Coming this Christmas is an action-adventure fantasy movie called 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves as a hero leading 47 “leaderless samurai” (“ronin”) to avenge their dead master in “a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft, and wondrous terrors”. It’s based on an historical Japanese tale, but with various liberties taken and a mystical overlay. (The release has been delayed almost a year for effects work and reshoots, which doesn’t bode well.) Here’s the trailer: Because it’s based on a […]

Illustrated Diaries Are Not Comics!

It’s a pet peeve of mine when people consider things like Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Dork Diaries graphic novels. I know kids love reading them, and that’s great. They’re fun and entertaining. They’re just not comics. That distinction may not matter, or I may be being pedantic in harping on it, but I’m glad to see that Amazon, at least, now agrees with me, as reported by Dave Carter. He regularly puts together a list of the Top […]

One Week Left to Submit to the Strumpet

The Strumpet, a transatlantic anthology featuring lady cartoonists from the UK and the US, is accepting submissions for its third issue — but there’s only a week left, since the submission period ends September 1. The first issue had a dress-up theme; the second one was about travel. The third will be “the tasty issue”. The issues are funded in part by Kickstarter, with successful campaigns for issue one and issue two. Watch for a third this fall. I’ve enjoyed […]

Jill Thompson’s Scary Godmother to Get Doll, New Comics If Kickstarter Funds

Jill Thompson has launched a Kickstarter to sell fashion doll replicas of her Scary Godmother character. Isn’t she cute? If this succeeds, Thompson hopes it will be only the first product available, with more to come. I love this description line: “[The Scary Godmother doll] stacks up much taller and curvier than your other fashion dolls that are out there. Have a sandwich, other dolls!” Although the doll appears to be high-quality (with changeable clothes, a pumpkin purse, and her […]

KC’s Teaching a Comic Book History Course This Fall

This fall, KC will be teaching The History of Comic Books in America for Madison Area Technical College. He’s excited about it, and so am I. It’s a survey/enrichment course. Here’s the description: This course tracks the development of a true American artform. Love Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, the Avengers? Learn their history and the forces that shaped their creation. But it’s not just superheroes! This 12-hour class also covers historical genres, from crime and horror to romance and teen comedy, […]

Psychiatric Tales Paperback Adds New Chapters

I really enjoyed Darryl Cunningham’s Psychiatric Tales when it came out a couple of years ago. (His later book, How to Fake a Moon Landing: Exposing the Myths of Science Denial, was released in the US this past spring.) It was originally released in the UK before being reprinted in the US. Now, the paperback edition is out in the UK with 40 new pages, which is made up of two new chapters and new chapter headings. Cunningham explains the […]

Friends of Lulu Newsletters, Volume 1, 1995-1996

I came across these while cleaning up after the move, and I thought I’d share them, for anyone interested. The following links reprint the first year of Friends of Lulu newsletters, “Lulu’s Clubhouse”. (Note that all addresses listed, including my old one, are no longer valid.) They’re quite the time capsule, particularly since the editors (Jackie Estrada and Heidi MacDonald) aimed to cover comic news overall. In the first issue, the Sailor Moon cartoon was announced as coming to US […]
