Legal Doesn’t Matter: More on Scanlation Sites

For the last month or so, spinning out of the Nick Simmons plagiarism mess, various smart people online have been bemoaning scanlation sites like One Manga and MangaFox. (Probably the two best known. I know some will say I shouldn’t be linking to them, but plenty of people easily find them by typing “read free manga online” or similar into Google.) These sites post manga scans online without having the copyright owner’s permission. Some have been translated by fans — […]

Plagiarism, Scanlations, and Copies: Nick Simmons’ Incarnate Rips Off Bleach

Today’s schadenfreude opportunity: Nick Simmons, writer/artist of Incarnate from Radical Comics (and son of KISS member Gene Simmons, which might account for some of the glee in watching his downfall), has been caught copying various panels and dialogue from popular manga series, including Bleach by Tite Kubo. I found out about the plagiarism accusations from Robot6, which includes the news that Radical has “halted further production and distribution of the Incarnate comic book and trade paperback”. I assume that includes […]

Best Manga of 2009

For the purpose of this post, I’m using a highly idiosyncratic definition of “best”, based mostly on what I looked forward to and enjoyed re-reading. I have a few subcategories, under which I’ve ranked a maximum of five titles, with #1 being best. Links take you to reviews of the titles. Best New Manga Pluto — Simply astounding, a meditation on the nature of what it means to be human in a time of great crisis, told through a gripping […]

Aurora Manga on Sale at Big Discounts

Manga from Aurora, Deux (the yaoi line), and Luv Luv (sex comics for women) are now on deep discount sale for the holidays (link no longer available). (Perhaps I should say “still on sale”, since the last time I talked about Aurora, back in March, they were pricing similarly.) Most everything is four dollars a book, or if you buy sets, the savings are even greater. For example, all 8 Luv Luv titles for $15 (or about $2 a book). […]

Gossip Girl Manga Preview

MTV has a five-page preview of the Gossip Girl manga from Yen Press. It didn’t give me the guilty thrill of watching the series, though. First, the narration is wrong. Instead of from a sardonic observer, the never-identified website owner, who both obsesses over and despises the people she covers, the voice here is Blair’s. Who is drawn more like a bikini model than the fashion follower and trend setter she is. I thought the other characters were generic — […]

Why Moyasimon Was Delayed: A Possible Explanation

Moyasimon: Tales of Agriculture was originally scheduled for release on September 29. Some bookstores got it then and sold it with no problem, but the official release date was moved to today. There has been various speculation about the reason for the delay being an “art issue” or “legal reasons“, but I think the first is more accurate. I have a release copy, and I also have access to a pre-release galley sent out for early reviews when the planned […]

Tokyopop News: Insider Webcast September 2

I’m attending the Tokyopop online press conference and sharing my notes with you. (I previously attended a similar presentation in July.) Lillian Diaz-Przybyl again moderated — good to see a friendly face. They opened with this Deadman Wonderland manga trailer. This new title was created by the team behind Eureka Seven, Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou. Volume 1 of 4 is on sale February 2, 2010. Hanako and the Teller of Allegory is an earlier series by Sakae Esuno (Future […]

Tokyopop Loses Kodansha Titles

As reported by Brigid at MangaBlog, Tokyopop has announced that its license to print titles from Kodansha has expired and will not be renewed. That means that they will not continue with new volumes or reprint previous volumes (after they have sold out) in the affected series. A full list of Kodansha Tokyopop books can be found at David Welsh’s blog. Some CLAMP series — Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, Clover — have already been announced as coming in new omnibus editions […]
