Viz Standardizes Shonen Jump, Shojo Beat Prices at $9.99

Thanks to a reader comment in my post on Tokyopop’s varying pricing, I was made aware that Viz appears to be standardizing on higher prices later this year. Previously, Shonen Jump titles were $7.99, while Shojo Beat books were $8.99. (A discrepancy that caused some conversation back in 2006. In that post, Christopher Butcher predicted this price rise, three years early.) I checked out some series I follow on Amazon. The only Shonen Jump book I buy regularly is Hikaru […]

Tokyopop Pricing: I Don’t Understand

I’m looking at four title launches Tokyopop has coming out in June. (All prices in U.S. dollars.) Takeru: Opera Susanoh Sword of the Devil volume 1 is a standard format manga title, which means 192 pages for $10.99, their new price point. (But it’s selling at 20% off on Amazon, which puts it at $8.79. That may be why they shifted from $9.99 — under $10 books don’t get discounted as much as over $10 books do, so even though […]

New Rumiko Takahashi Manga RIN-NE Now Online

Rumiko Takahashi, the most successful manga-ka in the modern era, author of such classics as Maison Ikkoku and Ranma ½, has started a new series. RIN-NE is being published simultaneously in the US and Japan. They get print, we get online. It’s about a schoolgirl who sees ghosts — a common manga concept, but one I’m sure Takahashi will put her own spin on. At the new website The Rumic World, you’ll also get news on Takahashi’s projects, including information […]

Much Viz Backlist No Longer Available Through Diamond

I’m late talking about this, but I want to make sure I capture it for historical purposes. I suspect, in years to come, some of us will be interested in tracing which decisions were made when and by whom as the direct comic retail market changed in unforeseen ways. Last last month, Diamond declared that it would be drastically cutting back on reorders for periodicals. Anything deemed such could only be ordered for 60 days (2 months) after the initial […]

Tokyopop in Trouble: More Cancellations, Including Aria

Well, that answers that question. I’m having a hard time finding Aria volume 4 because Tokyopop has given up on the series, along with others. What’s Up With Tokyopop? New Book Unavailable

I like the Aria series, but I no longer preorder manga from any retailer. I want to be able to browse, and usually manga, since they’re in book format, are pretty easy to find. That wasn’t the case here. Aria volume 4 came out at the beginning of December. I had some credit with a mail-order retailer, so I asked them to send it to me, along with several other graphic novels, at the beginning of January. I just got […]
