Viz Reprints Rurouni Kenshin Omnibus Editions

Earlier this month, Viz released the first volume of a new Rurouni Kenshin 3-in-1 omnibus series. The book contains the first three installments of the series about a wandering ronin by Nobuhiro Watsuki at a suggested retail price of $14.99 a volume. The series will continue quarterly. Rurouni Kenshin was first serialized in English beginning in 2003. The 28 volumes originally were published in Japan from 1994-1999. There have been anime and film adaptations, as well as a previous oversized […]

Planetes in Real Life?

Planetes is an exceptionally good manga series, recently reprinted by Dark Horse, about garbage collectors in space. Today, I saw this NY Times article, “Space’s Trash Collector? A Japanese Entrepreneur Wants the Job”. Sadly, this plan doesn’t involve sending people to space as interstellar garbage collectors. Instead, he plans to use a satellite to map the debris up there and then launch a glue-covered drone to grab it and burn it up during re-entry. Astroscale’s slogan is “Space Sweepers”. The […]

Fumi Yoshinaga Manga Soon Available Digitally

I’m excited by the latest digital release news from Viz Media — later this month, key titles by my favorite manga-ka, Fumi Yoshinaga, will be available digitally. On November 8, her collection of short stories, All My Darling Daughters, debuts. In my opinion, this is the single best starting point for her work, since it’s a single volume with a range of content (although one of the stories does have a problematic teacher/student interaction). The week after, November 15, brings […]

Anime Expo Manga Announcement Round-Up

I wrote my first post for ICv2.com, the comic business news site, last week, covering manga announcements made at the recent Anime Expo. Find out more about what Dark Horse, Kodansha, Yen Press, and Seven Seas will be putting out over the next year. I’m most looking forward to Ichi-F: A Worker’s Graphic Memoir of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, coming from Kodansha in March 2017.

Happy 30th Anniversary to Viz! Here’s a New Website

Viz Media has announced that it’s celebrating its 30th anniversary by launching a website redesign at viz.com. The actual anniversary is in July, since the company was founded in San Francisco in July 1986, so watch for more “exciting activities” promised for later this year. In the meantime, the refreshed “interactive web destination offers increased functionality, seamless interoperability and a host of easy-to-use new content features that are accessible across all platforms, including mobile devices and tablets.” Like many responsive […]

YaoiCon Celebrates 15 Years by Adding East Coast Edition

YaoiCon, to be held in the San Francisco area September 16-18 (the same weekend at SPX, but I imagine there isn’t a lot of audience crossover), will be celebrating its 15th anniversary of gathering fans of yaoi in anime and manga. Now they’re adding an East Coast gathering, BishounenCon, which will launch March 3-5, 2017, in Warwick, Rhode Island. The name change indicates a wider focus with the new show. Viannah Duncan, convention director, said, “we’ve taken our love of […]

Vinland Saga 8 Announced for US

When Vinland Saga returned from hiatus last year, the plan was only for the 6th and 7th volumes. Future volumes were dependent on sales. Apparently, those were decent, since publisher Kodansha announced at Emerald City Comic Con this weekend that Book Eight, collecting the Japanese volumes 15 and 16, will be out in Fall of this year. This edition catches the English-language edition up to the Japanese releases. And it comes with some advice for fans: be sure to watch […]
