More on Captain America TV Movies on DVD

As I reported last month, the 1979 Captain America TV movie and its sequel, Captain America II: Death Too Soon, will be coming to DVD as a double feature. This disc will be a very affordable $14.93 (list price). Shout! Factory will be putting this out, and the release date has been updated to October 18, just over a month away. Starring Reb Brown as Steve Rogers, these films update the setting to the then-current 70s, giving Captain America a […]

Rocketeer on Blu-ray Announced

Just in time for Christmas, Disney has announced The Rocketeer on Blu-ray in a 20th anniversary edition. Release date is December 13. The film is a cult favorite, about mechanic and test pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell), his curmudgeonly buddy (Alan Arkin), and his Bettie Page-like girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly) using a jetpack to fight Nazis in Hollywood. One of the bad guys is Timothy Dalton, playing an Errol Flynn-type star with secret leanings. I didn’t realize that director Joe Johnston […]

Captain America (Re-Released 1992 Edition)

After some delay, the 1992 Captain America movie is now available as a made-on-demand DVD as part of the MGM Limited Edition Collection. The only extra on the disc is the trailer. It’s under two minutes, and it’s remarkably dark, sometimes so much it’s hard to see what’s going on (a problem the film also demonstrated, at least in my setup). Still, nice to have as an extra, which tend to be rare on MOD projects. The movie is 97 […]

The Other Captain America Movies Will Be on DVD Too

Found on Amazon, there will be a November release for Captain America and its sequel Captain America II: Death Too Soon. These are the two 1979 TV movies starring the otherwise unknown Reb Brown, put out to keep the previously announced 90s telefilm company (it’s due out later this month), along with the big-budget Marvel movie that was so successful this summer. Shout! Factory is releasing, so the package should be nice, if nothing else — they’re a quality label. […]

1990 Captain America DVD Delayed, Cover Updated

The 1990 Captain America movie DVD, previously announced for release on July 19 via the MGM Limited Edition made-on-demand imprint, has been rescheduled for August 23. It will also have a new cover design, shown here, that adds the banner “re-released 1992 edition”. (Note that the movie was made in 1990, released internationally, and finally dumped straight to video in the U.S. in 1992, which is where that date comes from.) I wonder if some big company that might be […]

Captain America (No, Not That One) on DVD July 19

On July 19, MGM Home Entertainment will release, as part of their Limited Edition (MOD) Collection, Captain America. This 1990 film starring Matt Salinger will be available on DVD for the first time. (Of course, this is an unofficial tie-in to the big-screen Marvel movie Captain America: The First Avenger, out three days later on July 22.) The earlier Captain America tells the origin of the superhero as Steve Rogers becomes a super-soldier and fights the Nazi Red Skull (Scott […]

X-Men: First Class

Short version: Great film, fun experience, best if you read very little about it beforehand to avoid spoiling some of the surprises. I won’t be revealing any here for that reason. X-Men: First Class is a prequel to the other X-Men movies, establishing how Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Professor X, aka Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) first met, developed their theories on how mutants and humans should interact, and ended up on opposite sides. After a section that […]
