The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Now Filming With Lots of Geek Connections

I hadn’t heard about this until just now, but with these fine stars, I’m likely to go see it. Guy Ritchie, director of the Sherlock Holmes movies, is currently filming a movie version of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., a remake of the 60s TV show, starring Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) as CIA agent Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger, The Social Network) as KGB agent Illya Kuryakin. They have to team up to save the world, of […]

Adèle Blanc-Sec Movie Getting Director’s Cut Release

Urgh. I am ambivalent about the latest news from Shout! Factory about The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec. On October 1, they will be releasing a two-disc director’s cut Blu-ray edition. On the positive side, I guess this means the U.S. release did well enough to justify a follow-up. On the negative, I really hate it when movie companies double-dip — and with only two months’ separation between the releases, that’s pretty egregious. As with the previous release, the package […]

Interview With Jacques Tardi About the Adele Blanc-Sec Movie

The promotion team for The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec provided this interview with Jacques Tardi, the original comic creator. I’m reprinting it here because I admire Mr. Tardi’s attitude toward a movie adaptation of his graphic novel series and his inspiration for the lead character. Where did you get the idea for the character of Adèle-Blanc-Sec? The Casterman comic book publishing house saw my early work and commissioned me to make a series. I needed a main character to […]

Upcoming Pixar Releases: The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out, Finding Dory, Toy Story of TERROR!

News out of the D23 Expo, Disney’s fan convention, about upcoming Pixar releases: The Good Dinosaur explores what might have happened if dinosaurs never became extinct because the Earth was never hit by a giant “cataclysmic” asteroid. Arlo (voiced by Lucas Neff, Raising Hope), a 70-foot-tall teenage Apatosaurus, adopts a young human named Spot during his quest to restore peace to his tranquil community. It’s due in theaters May 30, 2014. Additional voices include Bill Hader as Forrest; Judy Greer […]

Lone Ranger Features Released on YouTube

To promote the upcoming film The Lone Ranger, in theaters starting July 3 and starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, Disney has released two behind-the-scenes featurettes. They do the job, since I’m more interested in seeing the movie after viewing these promos. In “The Craft”, producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks about the practical effects and settings, and Depp almost gets trampled by his horse. The footage included is quite impressive, particularly the stunts. “Hi-Yo Silver”, as you might expect, looks at […]

Monsters University Clips

Disney has released three new clips from Monsters University, the Pixar movie sequel that opens in three weeks on June 21. My favorite was this one, which shows Nathan Fillion’s obnoxious frat boy character Johnny Worthington (of Roar Omega Roar) recruiting Sulley (John Goodman) while brushing aside Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal). Fillion does smarmy voices well. We also get to see roommates Sulley and Wazowski meeting over a stolen mascot: And their (interrupted) fraternity initiation:

Monsters University Disney Storybook App

In advance of the coming movie, Disney Publishing has released a Monsters University Storybook app for iPhone and iPad. It’s fun to play with! You start by taking your picture for a student ID, which you can decorate with cartoon mouths, horns, eyeballs, and more to “monsterify” yourself. The “Read” option tells you the story of the movie (I assume), about how Mike Wazowski went to Monsters University to become a Scarer, with lightly animated screens and movie clips. (You […]
