Darn, Motion Comics Aren’t Dead Yet: Buffy Season 8, Black Panther Yanked

I had thought, after not hearing of any new motion comics since last year, that the unholy hybrid of comic panels and limited animation had died out like the fad it was. Unfortunately, this week’s Comic-Con-focused issue of Entertainment Weekly brings the news that Dark Horse is turning their Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight into a motion comic that will cover the first 19 issues. It launches on iTunes this week with a DVD to follow later this year. […]

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo

Review by KC Carlson When the first Scooby-Doo series debuted on Saturday morning in 1969, I completely missed it. It was shown opposite the Banana Splits — who I was obsessed with (still am) — and so I never really caught the Scooby-Doo bug at all as a kid. Except for the occasional New Scooby-Doo Movie where I had to catch a specific guest star. Even as a kid, I realized that this was a strange show, as each week […]

Here’s the press release, with some kibitzing: To save an earthbound Kryptonian, the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight unite once again -– this time to battle the powerful forces of Darkseid -– in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the ninth entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe […]

Tom & Jerry Deluxe Anniversary Collection

Review by KC Carlson Oh, what to do… what to do… One the one hand, the Tom & Jerry Deluxe Anniversary Collection might be an excellent “greatest hits”-type collection for the casual Tom & Jerry fan. On the other, if you’re a serious animation collector, you are going to be extremely frustrated and upset with this collection. On yet another hand (we are talking about cartoons, after all), this could be looked upon as yet another example of the WB […]

Tokyopop’s Dreaming to Become Movie

Tokyopop has announced a deal (link no longer available) to make a live-action movie of The Dreaming, Queenie Chan’s OEL manga series about a mysterious boarding school in the Australian wilderness. This “manga graphic novel series” (as the press release has it) originally ran three volumes, although Amazon has a listing for a Dreaming Collection due at the end of August. It sounds like Tokyopop plans to put out a single-volume omnibus of the story. Much emphasis is made in […]

The Losers Get Lucky

Review by Caroline Pruett If you want to see a future cult classic right now, skip the big summer blockbusters and check out The Losers — assuming you can find it. This movie opened weakly at the box office, drowning in a glut of similar-sounding films. A lot of comics fans knew it because the film, directed by Sylvain White, is based on a series created by Andy Diggle and Jock and published by Vertigo (more on that below). But […]
