Schoolhouse Rock! Election Collection

It’s important for everyone to vote, but it’s even more important that voters be educated about facts and issues. This release of selected Schoolhouse Rock! segments related to politics is a great way to bone up on some of the basics. You have to make sure that those you’re watching with don’t mind you singing along, though. The Schoolhouse Rock! Election Collection DVD, released September 23, contains fifteen segments grouped in four categories: The Campaign (covering positions and issues) Energy […]

Pushing Daisies

Pushing Daisies combines the love-with-obstacles relationship of a great screwball comedy with the brightly candy-colored visual imagination of the (first) Willy Wonka movie or The Wizard of Oz. There’s even a plummy voiced narrator (Jim Dale, who sometimes amusingly contradicts the characters) with a flowery sense of diction. I find it odd that I’m comparing this completely unique show to the best kids’ movies, but there’s something both very adult — dealing with themes of life and death and who […]

Kay Francis: Tonight on TCM

The Turner Classic Movies Star of the Month this month is Kay Francis. During the first half of the 30s, she was the biggest female star in Hollywood. Her melodramatic films were guaranteed successes. Yet today, she’s forgotten. Speculation has it that that’s because of the number of bad films on her resume. It seems that, at the peak of her career, her contract had her making more than the studio heads, so in an attempt to get her to […]

NY Times on Marvel and DC: Anime Series, Watchmen Movie

If you wanted to get more detail on the kurfluffle between Warner Bros. and Fox over who really has rights to make the Watchmen movie, read this NY Times article on how “turnaround” works and why Fox wants to prevent release of the film. Meanwhile, in Marvel news, four anime series featuring new versions of their characters are scheduled for 2010 in Japan. They’re aiming for “reimagining the back stories and redesigning the look of Marvel’s stable of characters to […]

Doctor Who: Black Orchid

I can’t believe that my very favorite of the original Doctor Who series is now available on DVD. And because of the length, it’s the cheapest Doctor Who DVD out there, which is a lovely plus. I think I like Black Orchid so much because it reminds me of the Agatha Christie mysteries I read so many of when I was younger. There’s a 1920s house party, and a fancy dress ball (where the Doctor, then Peter Davison, is given […]

Iron Man DVD Announced

I’m so excited! We’re getting a deluxe Iron Man DVD sooner than I expected! The 2-disc Ultimate Edition will be available on September 30 at a list price of $39.99. There’s also a single-disc edition for $29.99. I like the single-disc cover better, myself, but that’s because you can see Downey’s face, and I’ve become a fangirl. The single disc has the movie with deleted scenes. The ultimate edition has a second bonus disc that includes a six-part featurette called […]

Wonder Woman Original Animation Trailer

Out of the various original animation DVDs Warner Bros. has done, this is going to be my favorite, I can tell. The voice talent is amazing: not only are Keri Russell (Waitress, Felicity) and Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Waitress) the leads, but Oliver Platt is the voice of Hades; Rosario Dawson is another Amazon; and Alfred Molina is Ares (making for some odd crossover potential, since he was also the bad guy in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2). Wonder Woman is due out […]

Dark Knight Sets Box Office Record

The new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, set a new box office record, according to the New York Times. Warner estimates that the film made $155.3 million over the three-day weekend, beating the previous record-holder, Spider-Man 3, which made $151.1 million. $18.5 million came from the midnight showings, which were so popular that they scheduled more after the first ones sold out. Imax showings, which cost more for an average ticket, may have also helped the movie set a record. […]
