Batman: Gotham Knight

Review by KC Carlson and Ed Sizemore [A note from KC: When Johanna asked me to review the new Batman: Gotham Knight animated DVD, it didn’t take me long to realize that I was in over my head. Although the history of American animation is kind of a hobby of mine, I have only a very limited scope of what is going on in the rapidly growing world of anime. Sadly, except for the end credits of the DVD, the […]

Batman Begins

KC wants to go see The Dark Knight soon, before we hear too much about it. I’m not really interested — I can’t see clips without thinking how tragic it was to lose Heath Ledger — but everyone expects me to see it, and I want to keep him company. (We’ll see Mamma Mia! first, though.) I mention this only to explain why I finally watched Batman Begins — it was necessary homework. It was pretty much what I expected. […]

Birds of Prey

I’m surprised to see Birds of Prey out on DVD, since I discovered recently that few people remembered it. It ran only 13 episodes in 2002 on the WB, which may have been part of the problem — there wasn’t a WB affiliate in our city at that point, for instance. And it didn’t have the popularity among teens (demographic appeal) that protects other low-rated WB shows. Actually, I’m having a hard time figuring out who the target audience for […]

The Middleman

I know I’m about a month late, but that’s why I love TiVo. I just got a chance to start catching up on episodes of the Middleman TV show airing on ABC Family. I’d tried the first comic issue back when it was a free taste, and I enjoyed it, but I never kept up with it. I’m glad I checked this out. It stars newcomer Natalie Morales as Wendy Watson (or “Dubbie”) and Matt Keeslar as the square-jawed, straight-edge […]

Honey and Clover (Movie DVD)

I’d been putting off watching the Honey and Clover DVD because I enjoyed the live-action TV series so much. I feared I risked becoming a little tired of the story, too, seeing it a third time. On the positive side, the experiences are very different, so I wasn’t bored with repetition. For one thing, the movie opens with a large group of people instead of just a few. This continues through the film, with there being lots more people around […]

Popeye the Sailor 1938-1940 Volume 2

Review by KC Carlson Well, blow me down! This is great stuff! Although I’ve loved animation all of my life, somehow I let Popeye slip to the background in my frantic desire to learn all that I could about about the Warner Bros. characters (Daffy Duck is an important role model for me) and the people who brought them to life. Of course, I watched Popeye as a youngster. How could I not? He was everywhere in the kid-friendly TV […]

Nana (DVD)

I like Nana the manga series so much I was a little uncertain about watching the live-action movie on DVD, because I feared it wouldn’t be as good. I was wrong. It’s a different way of telling the story, but it’s well worth watching. I was amazed they found actors who looked so much like the characters. Nana is rail thin, just this side of sickly, with a great voice and the magnetic, forceful personality needed. She wears the miniskirts […]

Teen Titans Season 5

Out tomorrow is the final season collection of the Teen Titans cartoon series. (I’ve previously covered Season 1 and Season 2.) It’s 13 episodes on five discs. The first two episodes guest-star the Doom Patrol, Beast Boy’s earlier team, as a way of introducing their enemies the Brotherhood of Evil, who are the recurring villains this season. They’re made up, in their first appearance, of the Brain (a talking organ) and Monsieur Mallah (an intelligent gorilla). Two villains? Some brotherhood. […]
