Voyagers! Was the Anti-Doctor Who

As a bit of nostalgia, I bought the Voyagers! The Complete Series DVD set this summer. The series ran for one season, 20 episodes, from 1982-1983. I loved the concept — a befuddled time traveler, part of a group fixing mistakes in history, lost his instruction book (a popular concept of the time) and teamed up with a kid who knew a lot about history. The traveler was Phineas Bogg, played by Jon-Erik Hexum (known for dying young after an […]

Night of the Animated Dead – Why?

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released a 71-minute animated remake of George Romero’s zombie movie classic. Night of the Animated Dead retells the 1968 Night of the Living Dead. The studio is promising “terrifying new content not found in the original” (and sent me a review copy). I wouldn’t know, as I don’t watch zombie (or horror) films, although apparently it’s just one scene, extended. I am mildly curious, though, as to why the world needed a cartoon version of […]

Prodigal Son: The Complete Second Season

I didn’t watch Prodigal Son. I gave it a try, because Good Omens and Staged made me a huge fan of Michael Sheen, and this was such an unusual choice for a role. He plays a convicted serial killer whose son (Tom Payne) is a really messed up (obviously) profiler for the FBI and NYPD. The son is able to think like a killer but lives in fear he will become like his father. I didn’t stick with it, though, […]

The Herculoids: The Complete Original Series

review by KC Carlson I always knew that the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the 1960s were kinda odd (like super-powered ants and brain-dead detective squirrels —- and that’s just the start), but for the strangest of the strange, you should check out the new Warner Archive Blu-ray collection of The Herculoids: The Complete Original Series. (The studio provided a review copy.) The show originally debuted on September 9, 1967, on CBS. It centered around the family of Zandor (father), Tara […]

Black Widow Movie Lawsuit, Comes Early to Digital

Changing times means needing to reconsider traditional operating methods. Stars of big Hollywood movies often have profit participation deals, where they get more money the more a movie makes. We may find out much more about how this works with the Disney/Marvel movies, as Scarlett Johansson has sued due to Disney decision to release Black Widow simultaneously in theaters and online through Disney+, which is blamed for a disappointing box office take. According to The Guardian, the movie, which launched […]

Superman & Lois Blu-ray Set Has Extra Footage

I wasn’t going to mention this, as the show wasn’t for me, but there was one particular item in the press release that intrigued me. (I preferred the idea of the old Lois and Clark, couple flirting and working together and fighting crime, over parental and teen drama.) Superman & Lois: The Complete First Season arrives on October 19 (same day as the complete Smallville). There are 15 episodes on three discs for suggested retail price of $29.98 ($39.99 in […]

Smallville: Complete Series Coming to Blu-ray

This might be the excuse I need to finally sit down and watch Smallville. It seemed cheesy at the time, but now that many of the current superhero TV shows have turned dark, it might be fun to see a younger version of Superman (played by Tom Welling). I seem to remember liking Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, too. To celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary — and my, how time flies — Warner Bros. […]

Batman: The Long Halloween Parts 1 and 2

Batman: The Long Halloween was a 13-part miniseries themed around calendar events. Written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Tim Sale, it was one of several prestige events the two teamed on in the mid-90s. (There’s a deluxe edition hardcover collection coming out, but not until October.) The premise was that a serial killer, Holiday, was murdering people once a month on holidays. It also put a young Batman in conflict with Gotham mob families and retold how Harvey Dent […]
