Newer Streaming Services Have Older Content

Which is a good thing, if you ask me. Because I like older movies. And to me, a “classic” is 1940s, not 1980s, as I’ve seen it used recently. Courtesy of JustWatch.com comes this infographic. You’ll note that the studio streaming services — Disney+, Peacock, and HBO Max — are the newer kids on the block but have a longer tail and thus an older average content age. But then, the companies behind them have been around a lot longer […]

Staged Now Available in the US

One of my favorite quarantine watches has been Staged. It’s a British TV series in which Michael Sheen and David Tennant (who previously starred together in Good Omens) talk over video chat. They’re supposed to be rehearsing for a play whose staging was canceled due to the pandemic. Instead, they commiserate about life under lockdown, annoying each other and struggling with such challenges as home schooling and checking on the neighbors. Also appearing are their partners, Anna Lundberg and Georgia […]

If you’re looking for some escapism, particularly since many of us didn’t have a summer vacation this year, how about a whole slate of 60s beach party movies? Legion of Super Heroes: The Complete Series

Review by KC Carlson Recently issued on Blu-ray by Warner Archive is Legion of Super Heroes: The Complete Series. This three-disc set collects the animated cartoon series, which originally aired beginning on September 23, 2006, as a part of the Kids WB! line on the CW network. Producer James Tucker (who was also one of the series’ main character designers and a co-producer of the Justice League Unlimited series, also for Kids WB!) oversaw a total of 26 episodes. The […]

New Mutants #1 at Box Office

This was probably the only way The New Mutants was going to be a #1 movie. It opened this weekend in theaters, in spite of the need to maintain social distancing, and it took in $7 million. In over 2400 theaters, that’s a per-screen average of less than $3000. A news story about the local theater in my area said that, in a 300-seat auditorium, they were allowed to sell 10 tickets, so it probably wasn’t ever going to make […]

Batman: Hush

(This movie came out a year ago, and I just realized that although I made notes, I never actually posted my writeup. The studio provided a review copy.) Batman: Hush didn’t interest me at first, but it became the first of the original DCU animated movies in a long time that didn’t feel like an obligation to watch, something to grind through. That was due to two reasons: the prominent role for Catwoman (although you couldn’t tell that from the […]

Pay Video-on-Demand Gaining Greater Acceptance, New Audience

Is this movie news or TV news? More and more, it is difficult to distinguish the two. I’ve been using the site JustWatch.com to find out where items are available to stream. It’ll tell you where you can watch or rent movies and TV shows. It’s a help, particularly when it comes to obscure movies (turned out one was available for me to watch for free, easily, through Hoopla, the library service). They put out this infographic, looking at attitudes […]
