Much Ado About Nothing

A description of the project will pretty much tell you if you’re interested or not: Directed by Joss Whedon, Much Ado About Nothing uses the original Shakespearean text in a black-and-white version filmed in his home. The cast will be familiar to Whedon fans — Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof (both Angel) are Beatrice and Benedick, the wittily spatting couple who never shut up. Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) is host Leonato, while Reed Diamond (Franklin & Bash, but also […]

Thor: The Dark World Encouraging Science for Girls

The Marvel Comics branch of the Disney empire has had its issues in the past welcoming women, but the movie arm seems to realize that you don’t get great success without reaching out to everyone. Specifically, to promote Thor: The Dark World, opening November 8, they’re encouraging girls to think about careers in science and technology. As a tie-in with the Thor movie character of Jane Foster (who, as played by Natalie Portman, has been updated from a nurse to […]

Arrow: The Complete First Season

Fans of the comic know the backstory, although it takes on new immediacy seeing it on TV. Young billionaire Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) has been shipwrecked on a deserted island for five years. He roams the streets as a mysterious hooded vigilante, taking down criminals among the rich 1% (making for a timely undercurrent, that […]

Masters of Sex Debuts on Showtime Tonight — Recommended!

Just watched Masters of Sex on Showtime on Demand, and it was great — funny, revelatory, fascinating, and thought-provoking. Attitudes about sex in 1956 were restrained, as you’d expect, which made Dr. William Masters’ work exploring the physical reactions to intercourse and orgasm all the more surprising. Virginia (“Ginny”) Johnson was his secretary, later his partner in this groundbreaking research into human sexuality. Masters of Sex explores their work and personalities. Masters is restrained (with ego-driven deception when it comes […]

Batman: The Brave and the Bold Coming to Blu-ray Through Warner Archive

Coming in November, Warner Archive will be releasing Batman: The Brave and the Bold, my favorite superhero cartoon, on Blu-ray. The first collection will include the 26 episodes of season one, previously released on two DVD volumes. This is Warner Archive’s first animated Blu-ray release. Batman: The Brave and the Bold was a wonderful, fun treatment of superheroics with plenty of guest stars and creative storylines. It’s truly entertaining for all ages. Warner will be announcing more details on a […]

Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk

As I previously wrote, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk converts the six-issue comic miniseries by Damon Lindelof and Leinil Francis Yu to six 10-minute-ish “motion comic” chapters. It goes on sale tomorrow, September 10. The level of animation is lighter than I remembered from previous releases. For example, lips are made to move for dialogue, but eyes never blink, and nothing else on the page/screen moves. Movement looks like someone’s dragging paper cutouts around, or it’s done by moving the camera […]

The World’s End

I don’t want to say too much about The World’s End, the movie opening this weekend starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and directed by Edgar Wright, other than that it’s worth seeing. I went to see it last night knowing very little about it, and that made the experience much more fun and surprising. Usually, by the time I see a film, I’ve already heard about all the major events. The lesson here: if you know you want to […]
