Lionsgate Buying Summit

According to the NY Times, Lionsgate Entertainment, the movie studio best-known for the disgusting Saw horror franchise, will be buying Summit Entertainment, responsible for the Twilight films. Wikipedia calls Lionsgate “the most commercially successful independent film and television distribution company in North America.” Their slate has included American Psycho, Dogma, Fahrenheit 9/11, the comic book movies Kick-Ass, Punisher: War Zone, and The Spirit, the Conan the Barbarian remake, and the upcoming Hunger Games film adaptation. Summit’s other releases have included […]

What’s Your Number?

I’ve wanted to see What’s Your Number? from the time I saw the first trailer for it. I’ve liked Anna Faris ever since The House Bunny, and of course, I’m a big Chris Evans fan, given how many comic book films he’s been in (Captain America, Fantastic Four, The Losers, Scott Pilgrim) and that he looks amazing in all of them. The premise is this: Ally (Faris) has a loser boyfriend (Zachary Quinto). He leaves the same day she gets […]

The Rocketeer

When I first had a chance to see The Rocketeer, I was too young to appreciate the appeal of a simple adventure story. (I thought maturity required cynicism.) Now, I’m thrilled to get a chance to better appreciate the excitement and nostalgia of this 1938-set tale about a guy with a jetpack who fights Nazis and saves the day. It’s a lot more fun for me now, especially since I know more about the period and some of the inspirations […]

Warner Archive Brings Montgomery Murders to DVD

As part of their newest release wave, Warner Archive is offering a set of TV movies starring Elizabeth Montgomery, including The Black Widow Murders: The Blanche Taylor Moore Story. This one is a particular favorite for me, because I have a tenuous connection to the story. In addition to having one of those particularly Southern names, Blanche Taylor Moore was a serial killer in Alamance County, North Carolina, where I used to live. She was finally discovered to be poisoning […]

Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series

It’s Matt Smith’s second series as the Doctor! The 14-episode set of Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series begins with a disc containing the hour-long special A Christmas Carol, a charming story that freshens up the classic Dickens tale with comedy and a giant flying shark. The Doctor has to un-harden the heart of Michael Gambon by going back in time to make his childhood holidays more fun. It’s a brilliant blend of time travel and a story well-known enough […]

The Muppets: Some Thoughts on the Movie

KC and I went to see The Muppets on opening day, and while we enjoyed it, there were some aspects of the movie I wanted to talk about. It’s a good movie, but there were three things that left me wondering. The first was the central presence of Walter, the new Muppet. He and co-writer Jason Segal are brothers (the details of which are never explained), and their fandom for the Muppets drives the film. When the two visit the […]
