Marvel Motion Comics Come to Blu-Ray

In conjunction with the release of the Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. motion comic DVD on June 14, Shout! Factory has announced a Blu-ray release, exclusive to Best Buy. The “special edition” pairs the material from the Spider-Woman DVD with the previously released Iron Man: Extremis. At the time of this writing, Best Buy doesn’t have a listing for the Blu-ray, so I don’t know what the price is expected to be. The regular DVD has a suggested price of $14.97, […]

Can You Believe 10 Years of Smallville?

Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has made the first episode of each season of Smallville, 10 season premieres, available for free download on iTunes, to promote the upcoming series finale. That last episode, “Finale”, is scheduled to air Friday, May 13. I was just surprised to realize that this show ran for ten seasons! Watching this clip from the final season, I found myself wondering: where’s the high school? What’s with the newspaper? It’s obviously been quite a while since I […]

Frankenstein Jr. and the Impossibles

Review by KC Carlson Interesting things were happening at Hanna Barbera in 1966. The largest provider of cartoons in the early days of original television programming was famous for its funny animal successes, notably Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and Quick Draw McGraw, as well as their prime-time shows staring humans, including The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and Jonny Quest. The success of the latter led some at HB to start thinking more about adventure-type programming for Saturday morning. They began to […]

Young Justice Comes to DVD in Limited Form

From my perspective, the poor Young Justice cartoon can’t do anything right. I wasn’t impressed at the “all boys together” approach, and I gave up after being put off by the way the creator responded. Now that it’s coming out on DVD, I thought I might give it another try, but the one-disc release is so limited that I’m not sure it’s worth it. Season 1 Volume 1 is due out July 19, containing four episodes (two of which make […]

Should I See Thor?

I feel like a bad comic book fan this weekend. Everyone’s excited about seeing Thor, the latest big-budget superhero movie, but I’m feeling very ambivalent about it. I have never liked the character much — the exception, Thor: The Mighty Avenger by Roger Langridge and Chris Samnee, was killed young — so the reasons for me to go are weak. To support more superhero films? They certainly don’t need my help, with three more — X-Men: First Class (June 3), […]

Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. Motion Comic DVD Due June 14

Shout! Factory continues its line of Marvel Animation DVDs with the upcoming Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. This story, by Brian Michael Bendis (writer) and Alex Maleev (artist), started as a motion comic before being published, which is a reversal of the usual order. That suggests (one hopes) that this product should work well animated. Spider-Woman is reintroduced through a plot that involves her joining a mysterious espionage organization to gain vengeance on the Skrulls, who had previously kidnapped and replaced […]

Tron: Legacy

I was lucky to get to sample the five-disc (!) combo pack version of Tron: Legacy (list price: $80), even though I’m not able to evaluate the 3-D capabilities. There are four discs for the new movie — one each Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3-D, DVD, and digital copy — plus a Blu-ray for the original Tron. Personally, I would have rather had Tron on DVD also instead of the digital copy of Legacy, but I don’t have much reason to watch […]

Old People Kick Ass: Red

Based on the short comic series by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, Red is the story of Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), a super-cool retired CIA assassin put out to pasture while he still has his skills. He lives alone, with only a sprouting avocado and the phone voice of customer service for his pension (Mary-Louise Parker) for company. Of course, since this is Bruce, it’s not long before action arises and he gets to do really impressive things. Someone’s sent […]
