Nana (Anime Uncut Box Set 1)

The story of two young women named Nana moving to Tokyo as their adult lives begin, previously a manga series and a feature film, here is retold as a series of anime episodes. The two Nanas meet by accident on the train and then fall into becoming roommates. One Nana is a tough rock chick, coming to the big city to form a band and succeed at music; the other is following a guy, because she doesn’t know what to […]

The Middleman: The Complete Series

I’ve loved this show since I watched the pilot. It’s fun, clever, adventurous, and imaginative. The dialogue is wonderful and knowing, and I love the suit-up Avengers homage montage when Wendy finally joins the team. If you don’t want to read all the detail, here’s the short version: buy the DVD set and enjoy it. The concept (there’s more information at my earlier link) is that artist Wendy (Natalie Morales) is temping at a lab to pay bills when she’s […]

Leverage: The First Season

I found the opening season of the TNT original series Leverage — the Ocean’s 11-style TV show about a group of semi-reformed thieves working for justice — very enjoyable. If you haven’t been watching, you should check out this first season collection for some entertaining escapism as grifters take on powerful people when they’ve done wrong and no one else can set things right. Timothy Hutton stars as Nathan Ford, a former insurance investigator whose son died due to his […]

Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection

Review by KC Carlson There are a lot of good reasons to recommend Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection, the new two-disc collection from Warner Bros. The first is right there in the title — it’s all of Chuck Jones’ Tom and Jerry cartoons, whether as a producer, director, writer, or various combinations of all three. There are 34 cartoons in all. In fact, except for two notable non-T&J omissions, this set represents all of MGM’s theatrical cartoon releases […]

Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960s Volume 1

Review by KC Carlson In preparation for watching this excellent idea for a cartoon set, I made sure I went to bed the night before wearing my footie pajamas (the ones with the penguins), got up really really early, trudged downstairs with my blanket and pillow in the dark to spread out on the floor in front of the TV, made myself a big bowl of cereal (Rats! No Fruit Loops or Cocoa Krispies!) — making sure to bring the […]

Schoolhouse Rock! Earth

Schoolhouse Rock! Earth features 11 new songs and one classic about the environment. Contents * “Report From the North Pole” Panda bears sing about melting icecaps, and a “cub” reporter (get it?) visits other animals threatened by climate change in a non-musical section. * “The Little Things We Do” Mr. Morton and Pearl return with their son Norton and cat Orton (sigh) to demonstrate how small changes can help reduce energy consumption and global warming. It’s a nice picture of […]

The Zeta Project Season 1

Review by KC Carlson Former killer robot and spunky gal-pal make good! The Zeta Project is one of the lesser-known WB Animation/DC Comics projects. Lead character Zeta was spun off from a second season episode of Batman Beyond. The series first aired on Kids’ WB beginning in 2001 and ran — sporadically — for two seasons. It initially struggled to find an audience, but since then it has become a worldwide cult classic. As introduced in the Batman Beyond episode […]

Catching Up on Leverage

The problem, for me, with good stuff is that I put it off until I have time to enjoy it. (Mediocre stuff, that’s easy to buzz through without having to pay full attention.) Soon, I’m several weeks/issues/episodes behind. On the plus side, that means I can give myself a mini-marathon. That’s how I found myself watching four episodes of Leverage and looking forward to more. The Stork Job A couple is trying to adopt a baby in Serbia, only to […]
