The Doctor Tackles Superheroes in Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor #4

The fourth issue of the now-ongoing Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor series features a comic favorite: people getting superpowers. Only there’s a twist, of course. First, the comic — written by Cavan Scott, art by Cris Bolson — does something that can only be done these days in the comics. It mixes up characters from various eras of the show. The ninth Doctor, in the likeness of Christopher Eccleston, meets up with the later Mickey Smith, the one who’s become […]

Doctor Who: Supremacy of the Cybermen #1 Marks Doctor Who Comics Day

It’s summer, so once again, Titan Comics has declared their own holiday. Doctor Who Comics Day is July 9. Last year, they put out a weekly crossover series featuring four Doctors. This year, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cybermen, they’re putting out a five-part series, Doctor Who: Supremacy of the Cybermen, with an issue every two weeks. It stars the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors (plus Rose and Captain Jack) and is written by George Mann and […]

Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor #2

Now that I’ve gotten used to the somewhat stiff art style used for the miniseries by Brian Williamson (probably under constraints to keep the likenesses as on-point as possible), I can relax and enjoy the adventure, and boy, there’s plenty of that! Writers Gordon Rennie and Emma Beeby waste no time in explaining the plot — a crazy old lady has a way to open windows to the past with the Lamp of Chronos — and characters — Professor James […]

Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor #1 (Ongoing)

I didn’t care much for the Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor miniseries, complaining about its over-reliance on photo reference, slow pacing, and non-distinct character voices. I’m thrilled to say that, now that the series is an ongoing, the comic is much more enjoyable to read, with all those problems gone. It’s still written by Cavan Scott, but new artist Adriana Melo (Ms. Marvel) gives the art much more motion, action, and expression. The Doctor, Rose, and Captain Jack are still […]

Doctor Who Archives: Prisoners of Time Omnibus

As a companion to their many Doctor Who comic titles, Titan has collected the 12-issue Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time series originally published by IDW in 2013. Instead of the single-volume hardcover IDW put out, now we’ve got an affordable softcover with a cover that prioritizes the newer Doctors, in keeping with Titan’s audience. Prisoners of Time is a fun read for those who enjoy the whole gamut of Doctors (which only spanned to 11 when this was put out). […]

Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor #1

The historically most popular Doctor (at least in the states), the fourth, played by Tom Baker, gets his own miniseries of five issues. The first issue of “Gaze of the Medusa”, as written by Gordon Rennie and Emma Beeby and illustrated by Brian Williamson, sets up the elements, which feel like a classic 1970s Doctor Who story. There’s a mysterious old lady with possessed servants, classic monsters revisited (single-eyed “scryclops” in suits and top hats), and a young lady in […]

Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor: A Matter of Life and Death

Although a comic is the perfect format for more adventures for a version of the Doctor cut short by time and format, I was a bit disappointed by the first issue of this miniseries. I’m glad I stuck with it, though, because by the end, I realized it had done more than I gave it credit for. The five issues that make up this run, taken together, are like a perfect sample pack of Doctor Who story styles. My biggest […]

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #11

I know big, galaxy-risking, four-part stories are seen as more important, but it’s the one-off, quieter, more personal scenes that I really like in this series. I shouldn’t be too complacent, though, since those openings are often just the first part of another big adventure. In this issue written by Nick Abadzis and illustrated by Elena Casagrande, Gabby and the Doctor are back in New York City, but Gabby’s friend Cindy is mad that she’s dropped out of touch. While […]
