Aria to Return! But It’s Still From Tokyopop

In this roundup of recent manga announcements comes mention in passing of a beloved manga series returning. Aria, the gorgeously illustrated story by Kozue Amano of women apprenticing to be gondoliers on Mars in a sci-fi future, was first published in the US by ADV Manga in 2004. They put out three volumes, then Tokyopop picked up the license and released six, plus a two-volume prequel, Aqua, beginning in 2007. The sixth book came out in 2010, although the series […]

You Reap What You Sow: Tokyopop at Anime Expo

I find it amusing that nowadays, any time Stu Levy or Tokyopop is mentioned, plenty of people pop up to warn aspiring creators away from them. That’s a great use of social media, to share business knowledge and experience. Tokyopop was promoted as appearing at this weekend’s Anime Expo, including company founder Stu Levy offering portfolio reviews. The history, as I’ve been covering them over the past 12 years, is checkered, from dubious business decisions to questionable contracts to chasing […]

Tokyopop Publishing Again With Disney Adaptations

As hinted in summer 2015, Tokyopop is back, via two book listings in the Diamond Previews preorder catalog for the comic book store market. (No word yet on the bigger plans discussed for apps and a wide-ranging media presence.) Tokyopop stopped publishing in the US in May 2011 , after an attempt at a reality TV show. They came back in 2013 with print-on-demand versions of the few licenses they still held. Most were lost when the company went down, […]

Will Tokyopop Return? We’ll Find Out Next Year

This summer, news went around that former manga publisher Tokyopop, which stopped printing books in the US in 2011, was returning. Again. For the third time. Tokyopop had a panel at this year’s Anime Expo where they announced that they are “planning to begin publishing manga again in 2016” by “seeking to license ‘hidden gems that are not yet noticed’ from small or independent publishers.” That may be because big publishers no longer want to get involved with a company […]

Tokyopop Returns… Again. Sort Of.

The Tokyopop website is up again. The domain was previously redirected to Facebook a little under two years ago. Now, it’s a way to promote sales of their titles through RightStuf.com, their print-on-demand partner, as well as logo merchandise hosted on CafePress. The sales links caused some confusion, since they list an awful lot of Tokyopop’s OEL titles, plus Hetalia, the one license Stu Levy managed to keep. (Some random thoughts on the entire list: I had no idea Tokyopop […]

Tokyopop Teases More Publishing With Hints of OEL Return

Sean Kleefeld caught Tokyopop once again teasing readers on Twitter with hints that they would be publishing new volumes of their OEL series. (OEL, or “Original English Language”, is an umbrella term for what would simply be called “graphic novels” from other publishers. They were original works created for the American market.) The company stopped publishing over a year ago but returned from the dead with print-on-demand editions of Hetalia, followed by one of their most popular OEL titles, Bizenghast. […]

Tokyopop Signals Willingness to Discuss OEL Rights Return, But Contradictory Offer Lacks Details

Per the official Tokyopop Manga Twitter account, the question was asked at last weekend’s Anime Expo convention whether Tokyopop would consider returning rights to the creators for the OEL manga (original graphic novels) they are holding onto. The two-part answer was … the creators need to come to him to get the rights back. He can’t track them all down. And since they all have contracts, there will need to be some negotiations. But it’s not like Stu won’t give […]

Another Tokyopop Title Returns: RightStuf to Release Bizenghast 8

Following in the path of the Hetalia 3 announcement, Tokyopop and RightStuf.com have announced a second print-on-demand title continuation. M. Alice LeGrow’s Bizenghast volume 8 will be available in July for $15.99; preorders can now be made at the discount price of $10.99. Bizenghast was one of the most popular OEL titles from Tokyopop, and the previous volume came out at the end of June 2010. Based on this cover image, the design will match previous volumes, including the Tokyopop […]
