Revenge of the Librarians

With Revenge of the Librarians, Tom Gauld returns with another volume of witty, insightful cartoons about books, writers, and readers, following You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack and Baking With Kafka. The humor requires a certain level of literacy, but the feeling of “getting it” is addictive, reminding us of the joy of books. Gauld’s comic strips often make readers feel clever for getting the reference or feeling better informed after reading. There’s a wonderful, warm emotion of “oh! […]

Mr Doyle’s Class Presents A Study in Scarlet

This charming graphic novel aims to present “the original Sherlock Holmes story reimagined for a modern audience,” and it succeeds wonderfully. Mr Doyle’s Class Presents A Study in Scarlet is adapted by Matthew Hardy, illustrated by Russell Mark Olson, and published by the Portsmouth City Council, who also maintains the Richard Lancelyn Green collection. The goal is to introduce the novel, originally written in Portsmouth, to readers of all ages. A group of present-day schoolchildren are learning about A Study […]

Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Lucy Knisley with a baby carriage. Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos captures the graphic memoirist’s experiences with pregnancy and childbirth — which went about as not smoothly as you could fear, since she almost died during the process. From reading her previous autobiographical graphic novels, I knew she’d dreamed about having children for a long time. As she says in her illustrated introduction, the book covers two years of “what […]

A Kinder, Gentler Deadpool — For Two Weeks Only

I’m always fascinated when movies become so important in some way that they recut them for a wider audience. I remember, way back when, they put out a PG version of Saturday Night Fever (which I saw at the drive-in on a double bill with Grease). The latest example is Deadpool 2. Deadpool was the biggest R-rated opening weekend ever, a record broken by It and then again by Deadpool 2. But just in time for Christmas, on Wednesday in […]

The Prince and the Dressmaker

If you’ve heard of it, you’ve likely heard The Prince and the Dressmaker compared to a fairy tale. There are a bunch of reasons for that — the royal premise, the Cinderella-like experiences of the lead — but mostly, I find it accurate because of the unexpected happy ending. There’s nothing wrong with that! I don’t believe Jen Wang (In Real Life) intended to create a realistic portrayal, but a lovely fable of what things could look like if everyone’s […]

Best Manga of 2015

No, that isn’t a typo. I’m going backwards before looking forwards to fill in a gap, and because in years to come, I will enjoy seeing a summary of what I was reading in a particular year. (I’ve just finished doing some archive maintenance, and it was interesting seeing the short rise and fall of JManga from 2011-2013, for instance. Remember them?) As I’ve said before, for the purpose of this post, I’m using a highly idiosyncratic definition of “best”, […]

Favorites Return From First Second in Spring 2019

Continuing my coverage of what First Second is planning to put out about a year from now… I previously wrote about the launch of Maker Comics and plans for more Science Comics. Here are some stand-alone books that have ties to previous favorites. Lucy Knisley has a new graphic memoir coming next February. Her last major release was Something New: Tales From a Makeshift Bride, about her wedding, so now comes Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos, about her […]
