JManga Responds to Feedback, Drops Prices, Discusses Future Plans

When JManga launched in August, many early users were impressed with the idea of the site — the ability to access Japanese series that would otherwise remain unavailable in the U.S. — but dismayed by the price points and complicated subscription purchase system. Now, JManga has responded to the major complaint by temporarily lowering their prices. For the month of October, they’ve announced a sale: books that were previously the equivalent of $8.99 are now $4.99, while $19.98 books are […]

Green Lantern on Blu-ray

I was pretty excited to see this movie at home, since I’d missed it on its summer run in theaters. I know some feel that an effects-heavy film should be seen on the big screen, but I dunno, any movie that opens with an alien ghost sucking yellow spirits out of astronauts, I’m more comfortable seeing that from my couch. I wasn’t expecting to devote 100% of my attention to Green Lantern, since I was already familiar with the high […]

Stan Lee’s How to Write Comics

On one level, it doesn’t matter what’s in this book. You take that name and that subject matter, and Stan Lee’s How to Write Comics is already #1 on Amazon’s search for “how to write comics” before it’s even been released. On another hand, I’ve been looking forward to this volume, because it’s co-written by our friend Bob Greenberger, although you wouldn’t know it — the voice is distinctly Stan’s. The book is a survey/overview, but it’s well-formatted for browsing, […]

Why Isn’t Previews Online?

Graeme McMillan asks a good question: Why isn’t the entire Previews catalog online? Well, actually, he does’t ask that. What he says is: There’s something depressing about the amount of great material that not enough people are aware of, because they rely on the internet for solicit information, and it’s just not really out there for them to find easily. There’s so many comics that people just don’t know about. Short of just putting all of Previews online, what’s the […]

Usagi Yojimbo: Fox Hunt

I’ve enjoyed the recent issues of the Usagi Yojimbo series I’ve sampled, so I was eager to try the latest collection. Fox Hunt is the nearly unbelievable 25th in the series, although it’s smartly not numbered as such — that way, it doesn’t turn off new readers like me, and it stands alone just fine. The volume reprints issues #110-116 of the comic series by Stan Sakai along with the Usagi piece from MySpace Dark Horse Presents #18. The stories […]

CBLDF Gains Rights to Comic Code Seal for Licensing

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has announced that they “received the intellectual property rights to the Comics Code Authority Seal of Approval in an assignment from the now-defunct Comic Magazine Association of America, which administrated the Code since the 1950s.” The comics code of approval and its granting body officially became defunct early this year (2011), as the last two major publishers using the seal, DC and Archie, announced they would no longer use the process. Recent history of […]

Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?

Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? is another teen favorite of mine recaptured on disc by Warner Archive. I really shouldn’t have been watching this murder-comedy-romance at that age, but that’s part of the fun of rediscovering something you think you know — the nuances are all more visible to me now. And still timely! A large, blustery, self-centered Robert Morley is a London food critic and magazine editor whose doctor has told him that due to his […]

Justice League: Doom Pictures and Casting News

The original DC Animated film for 2012 will be Justice League: Doom, based on JLA: Tower of Babel, written by Mark Waid. That’s the storyline where the Justice League is taken down using Batman’s secret contingency plans to exploit each member’s weaknesses. The voice casting news for this film is great, bringing back plenty of familiar names and old favorites to play the characters, including: Superman: Tim Daly (The Animated Series, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) Green Lantern: Nathan Fillion […]
