Friends of Lulu Done and Gone

No one should be surprised after the news earlier this month that Friends of Lulu, the non-profit organization dedicated to getting more girls and women involved in comics, officially lost its non-profit status, but I have just heard from one of the interim group Directors that the group is “pretty much dead”. I’m not surprised, although I was hopeful something could be saved from the ruins the previous president left behind. No official announcement will be made. I have asked […]

Whatever Will Happen to the Comic Code Authority?

Jeffrey Trexler, at the Comics Journal website, has been exploring what will happen to the Comic Code archives now that it’s defunct, as is the organization that maintained it, the Comics Magazine Association of America. First, he reviewed the organization history, and most recently, he’s attempted to find out what happened to their archives. Strangely, DC took custody but refused to answer questions about them or allow anyone associated with them to talk to Trexler, himself a lawyer. The two […]

A Timeline of Josei Manga in the U.S.

Sadly, putting this together has reminded me of how much we’ve lost over the past decade as most manga publishers with significant josei output have gone out of business. For more information on josei manga, which is manga aimed at adult female readers, check out this 2008 overview article or this post about examples of the genre. Broadly speaking, there are two types of josei that we’ve seen in the U.S.: that of interest because of its subject matter (such […]

Bakuman Volume 5

Even with its questionable gender stereotypes, Bakuman is quickly becoming one of my most-anticipated current manga series, because of its insights into the creative-process-as-business. In the last volume, the kids became professional manga creators; in this book, they deal with the aspects that make the job work, not just a dream of making art and goofing off. As the volume opens, the boys get some bad news. The editor that discovered and guided them, the one that gave them all […]

Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D.

The latest in the line of Marvel motion comics available on DVD — and, for the first time, on Blu-ray — is Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D., out this Tuesday. This one’s a little different, since it was originally created for the motion comic format (instead of being in print first) by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev and released on iTunes in 2009. That makes it older than previous DVDs in this series. And that’s obvious, from the higher percentage […]
