Barbara Gordon, Junior Detective

You may remember reading Dean Trippe’s pitch for Lois Lane: Girl Reporter, an abandoned proposal that got some attention online a few weeks ago. After I linked to it, friend of the blog Bob Greenberger mentioned that he’d written a similar one, only this was titled Barbara Gordon, Junior Detective. Bob has kindly given his ok for me to run the proposal, dated October 2008, here, and that’s what you can read below. It seems that HarperCollins wasn’t interested in […]

Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. Motion Comic DVD Due June 14

Shout! Factory continues its line of Marvel Animation DVDs with the upcoming Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. This story, by Brian Michael Bendis (writer) and Alex Maleev (artist), started as a motion comic before being published, which is a reversal of the usual order. That suggests (one hopes) that this product should work well animated. Spider-Woman is reintroduced through a plot that involves her joining a mysterious espionage organization to gain vengeance on the Skrulls, who had previously kidnapped and replaced […]

Modern Masters: Jeff Smith

The usual Modern Masters subjects are most famous for their superhero work, with volumes on such well-known names as George Pérez, Alan Davis, John Byrne, and more recently, Chris Sprouse, Mike Ploog, and Mark Buckingham. While there have been fantasy artists featured in the past (see book 11, dedicated to Charles Vess, for example), the artists covered are still best-known to denizens of comic shops, with success within the direct market. This volume on Jeff Smith is thus something of […]

Tron: Legacy

I was lucky to get to sample the five-disc (!) combo pack version of Tron: Legacy (list price: $80), even though I’m not able to evaluate the 3-D capabilities. There are four discs for the new movie — one each Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3-D, DVD, and digital copy — plus a Blu-ray for the original Tron. Personally, I would have rather had Tron on DVD also instead of the digital copy of Legacy, but I don’t have much reason to watch […]

Old People Kick Ass: Red

Based on the short comic series by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, Red is the story of Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), a super-cool retired CIA assassin put out to pasture while he still has his skills. He lives alone, with only a sprouting avocado and the phone voice of customer service for his pension (Mary-Louise Parker) for company. Of course, since this is Bruce, it’s not long before action arises and he gets to do really impressive things. Someone’s sent […]

NBM Offers Limited Edition Geary Book Through Direct Orders Only

In a move that reminds me of Kickstarter-style levels of funding prizes, NBM has announced that Rick Geary’s next Treasury of Murder volume, The Lives of Sacco and Vanzetti, will have a “very limited special edition” available to order only in advance and directly through the publisher. Limited and numbered to advance demand, this edition will be specially bound in real cloth and include an original plate signed and numbered by Rick Geary, with a silver-stamped jacket. The book can […]

Tokyopop Redesigns Website, Throws Out User Content

Several years ago, Tokyopop tried to make its website “stickier” by adding all kinds of social networking features to emphasize the “manga lifestyle”. You had to log in to access certain areas of their site, and they encouraged discussion and posting of fan art. Brigid Alverson called it an attempt “to create a kind of MySpace for manga fans… What they ended up with was exactly what you always get when you open a website to user content and don’t […]

Tron: The Original Classic

Computer geek that I was, I somehow missed ever seeing Tron. I should have checked it out before now, just because it’s historically significant both in terms of its use of computer graphics and in how culture views and portrays hackers. The upcoming release of Tron: Legacy means that Tron: The Original Classic is now available on Blu-ray for the first time. In addition to the two-disc Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD), the movie is available as a single-disc DVD. […]
