Drinking at the Movies

I thought I was tired of autobiographical comics, but after reading this gem by Julia Wertz, I realized I was only tired of diary strips (or to use the upscale term, “graphic memoirs”) with nothing to say. In contrast, Wertz has in Drinking at the Movies a simple concept for a through-line: how and why she moved to New York (Brooklyn, specifically) from San Francisco. It’s not an unfamiliar story — and that makes it more relatable, as most of […]

Archie Launches Second Magazine Format Title: Veronica & Betty

Life With Archie, the magazine-format comic telling alternate-future stories of Archie’s marriages to Betty or Veronica, is apparently quite the success, so much so that today Archie Comics announced a second magazine title: Veronica & Betty. The new title, set to launch in May 2011, “will take Veronica and Betty far away from Archie and the small town of Riverdale into worldwide adventures!” They’re exchange students, and while they’re gone, Archie and Reggie are hanging out with the two girls […]

Hentai, Marketing Questions, and a Lost Josei: Some Manga News Links

Here’s a weird mash-up of two things I enjoy: The Straight Dope discusses manga and anime. Unfortunately, it’s in response to the question, “What’s the deal with Japanese tentacle porn?”, which is something I do not enjoy. Gotta love the phrasing, though: “Why are there so many rapist octopuses living in the Land of the Rising Sun?” The article itself is a balanced explanation of the history and reasons behind hentai, or porn manga. Daniella Orihuela-Gruber ponders manga marketing, specifically […]

Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics

Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics is an hour-and-a-half documentary covering the history of the company and their most famous characters. It’s narrated by Ryan Reynolds, who has a nice (if plain) voice, but much of the time, it lets some of DC’s best-known creators speak for themselves. That includes those no longer with us, as the package incorporates some surprising archive footage. Anything that opens with Alex Ross art of the Justice League looking down on us, as […]

Sand Chronicles Volume 9

The main story by Hinako Ashihara concluded in the last book, so this volume is all background. We start with Ann’s mother as a teenager, a standard tale made deeper by the knowledge of her eventual sad ending. She’s too concerned with what others think and tortured by the explicit, mean rumors that follow her. She can’t avoid them — either she’s seen as too warm (and thus loose) or too cold (stuck-up). Something about the depth of her desire […]

Miss Don’t Touch Me Volume 2

The tendency of the first book to work around its heroine, making her an observer instead of a protagonist, is even more pronounced in this followup, to negative effect. In short, throughout Miss Don’t Touch Me Volume 2, Blanche is a victim. She’s picked on, taken advantage of, drugged, and abused, and the closest she gets to learning anything or taking action is having others tell her, “you should have done this instead, but it’s too late now.” This volume […]

Otomen Volume 8

I’ve given up trying to make sense of this series — I just enjoy reading the over-the-top teen drama making fun of restrictive gender roles. Aya Kanno seems to be wandering through whatever conventions she wishes as a way of playing with her characters and providing entertainment to the reader. This time around, in Otomen volume 8, it’s the possibility of Ryo moving away for family reasons. That allows everyone to demonstrate just how much they’ll miss her in over-the-top […]

Library Wars: Love & War Volume 3

The most interesting elements of the series by Kiiro Yumi have been downplayed by this point in favor of generic romantic comedy. In Library Wars: Love & War volume 3, Dojo and Iku spat and argue, and her lack of self-control, instead of being charming, makes her seem childish. It’s no wonder their relationship can’t go anywhere; at this point, I wouldn’t want it to until she grows up. That would be acceptable if this was some schoolgirl shojo, but […]
