Orange Planet Volume 1 and Male Harem Manga

When I hear the term “harem manga”, I think of one of those series where a goofy guy has his pick of zaftig girls. I’d never seen the opposite — but I may just not have been looking hard enough. It seems that harem manga aimed at girls differs from that aimed at boys in three major ways: There are fewer boys involved, usually 3, instead of a half-dozen or more girls. There may be some plot beyond “falling in […]

Gakuen Prince Volume 1

I don’t know whether to be amused or appalled by this “opposites attract” rape comedy. The back cover blurb is generic, describing an all-girl elite high school that’s only recently started admitting boys, so there are still many more girls attending. It continues: So begins a wild, no-holds-barred competition for the boys of the school. Which smart and independent-minded girl will rise above the fray? Sounds like a lot of girls want one of the few available young men for […]

Her best friend is Akira, a boy two years younger who’s also a gifted pianist. Akira’s music is Takami’s comfort; no matter the problem, listening to him play makes her feel better. Now that he’s (barely) in his teens, Akira wants to go out with Takami. She’s used to thinking of him as a friend, not a lover. The more […]

New Rumiko Takahashi Manga RIN-NE Now Online

Rumiko Takahashi, the most successful manga-ka in the modern era, author of such classics as Maison Ikkoku and Ranma ½, has started a new series. RIN-NE is being published simultaneously in the US and Japan. They get print, we get online. It’s about a schoolgirl who sees ghosts — a common manga concept, but one I’m sure Takahashi will put her own spin on.
